Women's Basketball Completes Season Sweep Over JMU with 20-Point Road Win

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Towson University women's basketball team got the 20-point win over James Madison on the road, 87-67, to complete the season sweep.  

Kylie Kornegay-Lucas recorded her first double-double in the Black & Gold with 20 points and 10 rebounds. She came close to registering her second consecutive triple-double as she also earned a team best eight assists. Anissa Rivera paced the team with 21 total points for her fourth +20-point performance of the season. Allie Kubek (18) and Aleah Nelson (15) also reached double digits.  

Towson beat James Madison off the boards as well, 41-25. In addition to Kornegay-Lucas' 10 rebounds, Tarriyonna Gary also brought in seven off the glass.

How it Happened   

  • James Madison came out hot, taking the 8-2 lead at the 8:17 mark. Towson rallied to go on a 9-0 run throughout 4:00 to go up, 11-8.  
  • Both teams went onto trade possessions through the end of the quarter. The Tigers' defense reigned supreme, however, holding the Dukes scoreless for the final 3:05 of the period. The Black & Gold also forced four turns in the span to end the first with the 18-12 edge.  
  • The Tigers drew two quick fouls less than a minute into the second quarter to pick up momentum. Rivera hit both her shots at the line to give her team the six-point edge, 20-16. JMU didn't get their first bucket of the period until over 2:30 into action.  
  • The Dukes came back to score from deep on three consecutive possessions and take the slight 23-22 lead. Rivera came up clutch with an and-one to give Towson back the lead, 27-22.  
  • Through the middle of the quarter, James Madison went on a 6-0 run but it was ended by a three-pointer from Kornegay Lucas. Skye Williams added a layup to give the Tigers back the 32-29 edge. The teams kept the score close for the remainder of the first half as neither side went up more than four points.  
  • Rivera showed out big for her team once again, as she hit one at the buzzer to give the Tigers the 43-41 lead going into the locker room. She ended the first half with a team-best 14 points. The Black & Gold ended the opening 20:00 with 31 bench points.  
  • Out of halftime, Kubek extended the Tigers' lead with a pair of shots from the charity stripe. The Dukes had an answer though with a shot from deep to take the 46-45 edge.  
  • At the 4:43 media timeout though, Towson hit its previous three shots from the field to regain the lead, 53-48. Out of the stop, Nelson hit a three to cap off an 8-0 run for the Tigers to give the team the 58-48 edge. Towson went onto extend the streak to 13-2 and ended the third quarter with the double-digit lead, 65-54. Kubek led the charge with nine big points in the third.  
  • Rivera and Kubek came out to secure buckets on consecutive possessions for the Black & Gold and keep the team in front, 70-56 .  
  • At the 5:45 media timeout, the Tigers held the Dukes scoreless from the field for the 4:00 prior. In turn, Towson went up, 74-58. James Madison rallied to net five quick points out of the stop to make the score 74-63.  
  • Rivera hit an electrifying three-point play to give the team a spark and take the 77-63 lead. With under 2:00 to go, the Black & Gold hit five of their last seven from the floor to go on yet another 6-0 run.  
  • Towson ended contest a perfect 5-of-5 from the field while holding James Madison to 1-of-7, 87-67 victory. 

Inside the Numbers     

  • Towson completed the season sweep over James Madison with the win on Sunday afternoon to mark the first time the Black & Gold have defeated JMU twice in one season since the 2016-17 campaign. Towson has now completed season sweeps over Elon, William & Mary and James Madison.  
  • This is the Tigers' first 18-win season since 2018-19 (20-13). This is also the team's first slate with nine Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) wins since the 2009-10 season when the team went 9-9.  
  • Sunday's game marks the fourth time this season two players have scored +20 points in a game, as the team also eclipsed the feat against James Madison (Kubek, 28-Rivera, 20), Northeastern (Nelson, 24-Kubek, 22) and Delaware (Nelson-24-Kubek-20). The outing marks Rivera's fourth +20 performance of the season and Kornegay' Lucas' second.  
  • With 41 rebounds against JMU, the team has now secured 40+ boards in all but two contests this season. They have either won or tied the fight off the boards in 17 contests.  
  • At least two Tigers have cracked double figures in 22 of 23 outings so far this season as three four double figures against the Dukes. Nelson has now scored 10+ points in 21 of 23 contests, including the last eight games.  
  • Towson scored 21 points off 16 JMU turnovers. The team also totaled 10 steals for their ninth double-digit takeaway game of the season. Kubek led the way with three steals. 
  • The Tigers outscored the Dukes in the paint 4-26 and off the bench a whopping, 49-4.  

Next Game   
 
Towson is set to return home to host UNCW on Feb. 18 (7 p.m.) and Charleston on Feb. 20 (2 p.m.).  

The Tigers will celebrate their Play4Kay game against the Seahawks and their Autism Awareness game against the Cougars.
