No. 28 Gymnastics Picks up Ninth Home Win, Topping Penn

TOWSON, Md. – Behind a solid team effort, the No. 28 Towson University women's gymnastics program picked up its ninth dual win of the season, topping visiting University of Pennsylvania 195.950-195.375 Sunday afternoon at SECU Arena.

Towson (11-2) stayed unblemished at SECU Arena this year, improving to 9-0 at the friendly confines. While Towson did not improve on its previous score for the first time this season, the Tigers did increase their average, which was 195.338 entering the week.

The Tigers had 10 reach the podium during the meet, including a tie for first on floor from sophomore Grace Vaillancourt, who scored a 9.875 in Towson's final rotation. Lauren Bolen completed her first all-around effort of the year, finishing third with a 38.050.

Penn (6-5) had the top two all-around spots as Sydney Kraez finished first with a 38.925 while Sara Kenefick went for a 38.250.

How it Happened
  • Leading off on vault, freshman Elise Tisler finished second on the day, scoring a 9.825 and tying her career-best. Junior Camille Vitoff tied with Tisler for second, also scoring a 9.825 in the anchor spot for Towson.
  • The Tigers' next three scorers all tied for fifth as Jenna Weitz, Nikki Borkowski and Mia Davis all scored 9.750s.
  • Vaillancourt finished second on bars, sticking a 9.875, just a quarter-tenth behind Penn's Sarah Penuela-Weremers, who won the event with a 9.900. Clara Hong and Sarah Girot tied for third, each scoring a 9.850. Freshman Lauren Keener was fifth overall with a 9.800.
  • On the beam, Towson had two of the top three spots as Hong secured second place with a 9.850, just shy of her career-high. Beam specialist Emerson Hurst recorded a 9.800 for third. Bolen and Weitz tied for fifth on beam as they both scored a 9.775. 
  • Vaillancourt tied for first on the floor with her 9.875, tying a career-best effort. Weitz took third in the event, scoring a 9.850, a season-best for the junior.
  • Towson had a strong showing on the floor as Hong and Amy Stewart took third as each Tiger scored a 9.850. Bolen was the fifth scorer, taking seventh with a 9.775.
  • Bolen finished third in the all-around, carding her first all-around effort of the year with a 38.050. She is just the second Tiger to post an all-around score this year, joining Hong's Jan. 14 routine.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson improved its season average thanks to its 195.950 on Sunday. The Tigers' average was 195.338 entering the week. 
  • Competing for the sixth-time on Super Bowl Sunday since the 2000 season, Towson recorded its best team score on the day of the big game. The previous best was a 194.950 set on Feb. 5, 2017 in a quad-meet at George Washington with Ball State and UNH.
  • The Tigers improved to 9-0 at SECU Arena this year, the most home dual wins in a season under head coach Jay Ramirez. It is the most wins at home since the Tigers went 11-7 during the 2018 season.
  • Towson is now 17-7 at SECU Arena under Ramirez.
  • The Tigers extended their winning streak over the Quakers, improving to 5-0 against Penn since 2011. Towson is 3-0 at home against Penn in that span.

  • The Tigers return to SECU Arena for one more home meet this month.
  • In what is now a tri-meet, the Tigers welcome Ursinus College and West Virginia University to Towson.
