Towson Men’s Basketball Comeback Attempt Comes Up Short at Northeastern

BOSTON – The Towson University men's basketball team got to within one possession late after being down 14 but fell at Northeastern 58-53 on Saturday afternoon.

Towson (17-7, 8-3 CAA) rallied late from its deficit to get within three with 1:53 remaining, getting a few chances to tie the game, but Northeastern (7-16, 1-11 CAA) held and sealed the game with late free throws.

This loss snaps Towson's three-game winning streak.  The Tigers still hold second place in the league.

Key Stats:
  • Towson earned 40 of its 53 points in the paint today, holding Northeastern to 22 in the same area.  Towson also picked up 16 points on turnovers to Northeastern's 0.
  • Cam Holden finished with a game-best 21 points, going 7-for-13 from the field.  Charles Thompson earned 14 points off 5-for-7 shooting.
  • For Northeastern, Chris Doherty had a double-double on 14 points and 10 rebounds, adding two blocks.  Shaquille Walters picked up seven points and eight boards.
How It Happened:
  • Each side kept the pace down in the early stages, using most of the shot clock on possessions.  Northeastern got the early advantage using the paint on layups for a 6-0 run, then, following an Antonio Rizzuto drive to the basket, saw Nikola Djogo hit a three to send the home team up 9-2 by the first media timeout.  Another three later sent Northeastern up 12-2.
  • Cam Holden looked to take charge in the paint, scoring two of the following three Towson baskets including a top-of-the-arc three to pull the Tigers within four at 15-11 NU with 10:15 in the 1st.
  • Northeastern went back up eight with layups, then Towson countered back with paint play of its own, including a putback by Holden in the lane and a steal then layup by Rizzuto.  Towson trailed 19-15 with 6:50 to play in the 1st.
  • Continuing to pass all around the arc, Northeastern went on a 9-0 run in the next three minutes to build its lead to 13.  Again Towson went to the frontcourt to chip away, with Charles Thompson knocking down the hook shot then Juwan Gray hitting the layup in severe traffic in the circle.  A couple of late layups by Chris Doherty for Northeastern gave the Huskies a 32-21 lead at half.
  • Towson came out with energy in the second half, getting the ball inside to Thompson and Nicolas Timberlake for back-to-back baskets to get within seven: 32-25 Northeastern with 18:28 to play.
  • Following an exchange of points, the Huskies got the next six points for a 14-point advantage.  Towson made adjustments and kept the attack going inside, pulling the deficit to eight off a steal and score from Gray to make it 41-33 with 13:15 to play.
  • Again Northeastern got back ahead by 12, then Towson attacked back off scoring from Holden and Thompson, getting back to within six with physical play.  A couple of free throws by Holden made it 47-41 with seven minutes left.
  • The two sides kept trading baskets as Northeastern stayed ahead.  With two minutes left and the Towson defense holding off the Huskies on the scoreboard for over three minutes, Holden got another pair of free throws to get Towson within a possession at 54-51 with 1:53 left.
  • Both teams went back and forth, with neither able to score.  After a missed Towson basket, Jahmyl Telfort scored a couple of free throws to get NU back up five.  Thompson hit a late putback layup, but Towson could not bridge the final gap and fell 58-53.
