PHILADELPHIA – The Towson University women's basketball team outscored Northeastern 23-4 in the final quarter in the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women's Basketball Tournament Quarterfinals to come out with the 58-49 win. The Tigers will advance on to meet Delaware in the Semifinals on Saturday, March 12 at 3:30 p.m.
Anissa Rivera led the team in the huge fourth quarter effort, netting eight of her 11 total points in the last 10 minutes of play. Tarriyonna Gary and Allie Kubek hit back-to-back three's to kick off the fourth period before Rivera took over, getting to the rim on three consecutive possessions to give the Tigers the ultimate lead.
CAA Sixth Player of the Year, Kylie Kornegay-Lucas, played a key role in the win with a full stat line of 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and five steals. Aleah Nelson added a team-high 14 points as well as three helpers.
Rivera and Kubek paced the team off the glass with eight rebounds apiece.

How it Happened
- Northeastern got out to an early 7-3 lead, as Gary got Towson on the board with a three. Halfway through the first quarter the Tigers struggled, going 0-of-6 from the field. Both teams failed to get a basket for over two minutes of play. Kornegay-Lucas hit a pair of shots at the line to end the drought and make the score 7-5.
- The Huskies answered with scores on back-to-back possessions to take the 11-5 edge. Kornegay-Lucas turned the momentum with a steal and a bucket, going coast-to-coast. The score put the game within four points, 11-7.
- As time was expiring in the opening 10 minutes, Kornegay-Lucas drove to the rim and tied up the score, 12-12.
- Northeastern regained the lead early but less than three minutes into the second, Towson tied it up once again, 16-all.
- The Black & Gold took the 18-17 advantage just before the halfway point, with a layup from Gary. The Huskies tied the score up again though shortly after. The two teams went onto trade the lead until the opposition went up 26-21 with just over a minute left in the half.
- Northeastern hit two shots from deep to end the first half and secure the 29-21 lead going into the locker room.
- Nelson got Towson on the board quickly in third quarter to cut the deficit, 29-23. The Huskies proceeded to go a 7-0 run and take the 36-23 edge.
- Rivera ended the rut with a jumper and then added a shot from the charity stripe to put the contest within 10 points, 36-26.
- Northeastern added another three-pointer before the 4:41 media timeout to go up 39-26, its biggest lead of the night. With just over three minutes to go, Nelson hit two free throws to put the game within single digits, 39-30.
- Both teams struggled in the final minutes of the period, going over three minutes without a field goal.
- The Tigers got the difference down to eight points with a minute to go, but the Huskies hit one more bucket before the end of the third to come out in control, 45-35.
- Gary hit a big three to start off the final quarter and put the contest back within single digits. Kubek followed up with a three of her own with just over seven minutes to go to put the game within four points, 45-41.
- Rivera rallied for her team to score on three consecutive possessions and give Towson the 48-45 lead. Nelson added a three-pointer while Kornegay-Lucas recorded a takeaway and bucket to extend the lead, 53-45. The points capped a 18-0 run for the Tigers.
- The Black & Gold followed up with five shots from the foul line to complete the comeback victory, 58-49.
Inside the Numbers
- With the victory over the Huskies, the Tigers reset the program record for most wins in a season with 24 victories.
- Head coach Diane Richardson now has two 20-win seasons under her belt as she also reached 20 wins in the 2018-19 campaign. The 2021-22 slate is the third 20+ victory campaign in program history.
- This will be coach Richardson's second trip to the CAA Tournament Semifinals in her five years at the helm for the Tigers. She also advanced the semifinal round in 2019 when she won the program's first conference championship.
- Throughout the season, Towson has held opponents to under 35.5 percent shooting 16 times as Northeastern shot 28.3 percent (17-of-60) on Friday.
- The team has also held its opponents to less than 10 points in a quarter 16 times this season. The Tigers held Northeastern to just four points in the final quarter of action on Friday night.
- With 45 rebounds in the Quarterfinals, the Tigers have grabbed 40+ boards in all but three contests so far this season, including the last 16 of 18 outings. The team has either won the fight off the glass or tied in 21 games.
- After sweeping Northeastern in the regular season, Friday's win marks the third win for the Black & Gold over the opposition this season. Towson now holds the 24-22 all-time advantage.
- During the Tigers 18-0 run, the team held the Huskies scoreless for the first 8:43 of the fourth quarter.
- At least two Tigers have cracked double figures in 29 of 30 outings so far this season as four landed in double figures against the Huskies. Nelson has scored 10+ points in 28 of 30 games this slate, including the last 15 outings.
- Towson continued to see production from its non-starters with 13 bench points. The Black & Gold have reached double-digits off the bench in the last 14 games and have reached +30 on seven occasions.
