TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's tennis team defeated Hofstra, 6-1, on Friday evening to secure its first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) win.
"Today was an important match," head coach Jamie Peterson said. "It was a big win for Towson. A complete team win. We came out with really good energy from the start. We met a lot of adversity in the singles matches. Hofstra is a tough team, they are fighters. But we closed it out and got the win."
Themis Haliou and Sissi Axelsson (No. 1) and Amelia Lawson and Lea Kosanovic (No. 3) won their doubles matches to secure the first point of the match.
The Tigers followed up with wins on the first five singles courts to secure the victory. Axelsson started the team off with a win on court No. 5 in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Haliou (6-4, 7-6 (4)) and Assenmacher (7-5, 7-6 (1)) fought in second-set tiebreaks to win on courts No. 2 and No. 3 and secure the win. Pospischill also stayed tough to win her match on court No. 4 in three sets, 6-0, 4-6, 6-0.
