TOWSON, Md. – Towson University women's basketball team defeated top Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) team Drexel on Senior Day, 69-61.
The Tigers capped off the regular season on a high note, as the win over the Dragons marks the 23rd victory of the season to set the new program record for most victories in a season. Aleah Nelson had a record-setting day as well, recorded six assists to bring her season total to 156 helpers and set the program new season single assist high.
Anissa Rivera led the team in the victory with 22 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Skye Williams had a big game with 16 points and seven boards. Nelson (10) and Kubek (12) also ended in double digits.

How it Happened
- Williams hit an early three-pointer to give Towson an early 3-0 lead. Drexel stayed on it though, coming back to take the 4-3 lead with under three minutes into play.
- The Dragons built on the momentum, going on a 6-0 run, holding the Tigers scoreless for 3:39. Kubek ended the spurt with a pair of shots from the charity stripe. Drexel stayed in control though, 11-8.
- Kubek fought through the contact in the paint to cash in on a layup and tie the score 13-13 with just under three minutes to go in the first. Rivera followed up with a bucket to give her team the lead, 17-15. Drexel got one just before the buzzer to tie it up at the end of the opening quarter, 17-17.
- After a score from the Dragons to start the second, Rivera came up with the steal and the jumper to take back the 20-19 lead. The Tigers piled on to extend their lead, 25-21.
- At the 4:59 media timeout, Towson had held Drexel scoreless for the previous 2:42. Out of the stop, the Dragons turned the tables as it was the Black & Gold who struggled to get to the rim. The Tigers were held scoreless from the floor for over three minutes. Drexel in turn tied the score 27-27 with just over two minutes to play in the first half.
- The Tigers rallied, scoring on consecutive possessions and to regain the 31-27 edge. Just before halftime, the Dragons secured one more score to put the game within two points, 31-29.
- Nelson recorded three helpers in the first half to break the single season assist record with 153 total dimes. Kubek also secured 11 points to pace the squad.
- Both teams traded scores to start the third, as Drexel tied the score 34-34 less than three minutes into action. Tucker drew a foul and made both shots at the line to give the Tigers the 36-34 edge. Rivera followed up with a deep three at the top of the key to extend the lead, 38-34. The points helped Towson to an 8-0 run. They also forced five turnovers from the Dragons in the span.
- Drexel come on strong on the defensive end, forcing three turnovers and holding Towson scoreless for over 2:30. Nelson rallied for her team however, hitting back-to-back three-pointers to keep her team ahead, 47-39.
- As the Dragons were called for a late shot clock violation, the Tigers ended the third with the ball and the 48-39 lead.
- Towson got out to a fast start in the final ten minutes, getting two scores and forcing a turnover early to keep the 52-41 edge.
- Out of the 4:57 media timeout, Williams hit a three and Rivera added a layup to give the Tigers the 64-51 advantage. Shortly after the Dragons scored a pair of shots from the foul line to cut the deficit, 64-55.
- Both teams traded baskets to make the score 66-58 with 1:12 to play. Williams drew a foul with just over a minute to play and hit both at the charity stripe to give the Tigers the 68-58 lead. Nelson added a free throw of her own with 22 seconds to go to keep her team in control, 69-60.
- Drexel added a single free throw before the end of the contest, but it was not enough as Towson came out with the nine-point win.
Inside the Numbers
- With the victory over the Dragons, the Tigers set the new program record for most wins in a season with 23 victories. The previous best of 22 wins was set in 2007-08.
- Head coach Diane Richardson now has two 20-win seasons under her belt as she also reached 20 wins in the 2018-19 campaign. The 2021-22 slate is the third 20+ victory campaign in program history.
- With six assists on Saturday afternoon, Nelson broke the single season assist record with 156 total helpers. The previous high of 151 was set by Q. Murray during the 2019-2020 season.
- The victory marks the second consecutive season Towson has defeated Drexel on its own Senior Day. The Black & Gold also earned the 77-62 win over the Dragons last season to end the slate at home.
- The Black & Gold handed Drexel just its second loss in conference play as the team's only other loss in the CAA was to Charleston, 74-73. The victory also ended an eight-game win streak for the Dragons.
- Througout the season, Towson has held opponents to under 35.5 percent shooting 15 times as Drexel shot 33.3 percent (21-of-63).
- As Rivera recorded 22 points on Saturday, she has now registered five performances over 20+ points, the second most on the team.
- At least two Tigers have cracked double figures in 28 of 29 outings so far this season as four landed in double figures against the Dragons. Nelson has scored 10+ points in 27 of 29 regular season contests, including the final 14 games.
- Towson continued to see production from its non-starters with 36 bench points. The Black & Gold have reached double-digits off the bench in the last 14 games and have reached +30 on eight occasions.

As the #3 seed, the Tigers will play in the CAA quarterfinals at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on March 11 at 7:30 p.m. The team will face the #6 seeded Northeastern Huskies.
