Benzing Repeats as CAA Men’s Swimmer of the Year

RICHMOND, Va. – After an outstanding sophomore campaign, Towson University men's swimmer Brian Benzing has been named CAA Men's Swimmer of the Year for a second-straight season. The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) made its announcement Wednesday morning.

Benzing, who was Honorable Mention All-America by reaching the B Finals of the 2022 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, earned the honor for a second year in a row after doubling as the CAA Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet and CAA Swimmer of the Year last spring.

The Catonsville Marylander reset the program and CAA record during the 2022 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, lowering the mark to 51.47 seconds in his signature swim, the 100-yard breaststroke, earning the top spot in the B Finals. He entered the meet ranked 22nd with a qualifying time of 51.95, set during the Princeton Last Chance Meet.

Benzing has dominated the 100-yard breaststroke at the college level, winning the CAA Championship two years running, while also going unbeaten in every regular season meet in the event.

The sophomore was crucial in the Tigers success at the 2022 CAA Championships, winning the 100-yard breaststroke, while finishing second in both the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard breaststroke. Benzing hit a B Cut time in each individual event he swam. Benzing swam on four relay teams, helping Towson capture the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.

In addition to Benzing's honor, the CAA announced its major award winners: Men's Diver of the Year Nic Newis (UNCW), CAA Co-Men's Rookie Swimmers of the Year Alessio Gianni (Drexel) and Sam O'Brien (UNCW) and Men's Rookie Diver of the Year Nic Newis (UNCW).

The CAA also announced its All-CAA picks, based on a top-three finish in each event final at the 2022 CAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
