ELON, N.C. – The No. 7 seeded Towson University women's tennis team fell in the first round of the 2022 Women's Tennis Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament to No. 2 seed William & Mary, 4-0, on Friday afternoon.
"The team did what I asked them to do today," head coach Jamie Peterson said. "I told them I could not be prouder of them for how they competed. We were in positions to win some matches, but they were a little too strong for us. William & Mary deserved it today."
The Tigers lost the hard-fought doubles point as the Tribe picked up wins on courts No. 1 and No. 3. On court No. 2, the duo of Jessica Assenmacher/Amelia Lawson was up 3-0 at the start of the match, but then went unfinished.
William & Mary kept the momentum going in singles, as the opposition picked up straight set wins on courts No. 3, No. 2 and No. 6 to clinch the match victory.
Themis Haliou won her first set and was ahead in the second on court No. 1 against CAA standout Mila Saric, 6-4, 2-1, before play was stopped. Sarah Pospischill also picked up a win in the first set and was ahead in the second on court No. 4 (6-4, 2-1).
"Without the leadership, effort and focus of the three seniors we would not have been able to come back in the second half of the season and play like that," Peterson added. "We are going to miss those girls and what they bring to the team. I know they will have successful futures in whatever they chose to do."
