BOSTON – The Towson outdoor track and field team finished day one of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships in second place with 42 points. Elon currently leads the standings with 46 total points while Delaware follows closely in third with 41 points.
The Tigers ended day one with two first place finishes as Georgia Coleman won the hammer throw and Hayley Horvath earned gold in the pole vault for the third consecutive season becoming the second three-time women's pole vault champion in CAA history.
How it Happened
- The Tigers did very well in the sprinting preliminaries. Crystal Johnson took first in the 100m preliminaries, clocking 11.82 while Sydney Tucker took seventh (12.19). Johnson also won the 200 meter prelims (24.22) as Cristal Cuervo placed fourth (24.46). Cuervo won the 400m prelims with a time of 55.08, Chalys Caruth followed in seventh (56.77). The finals of all three races will take place tomorrow.
- Ainsley Jacobs took fifth in the 10000m, clocking 36:36.89.
- Rachel Thomas was the lone qualifier for the Tigers in the 800m with a final time of 2:16.27 to take eighth place.
- Kayla Thrope took third in the javelin with a throw of 44.38 meters.
- Georgia Coleman won the hammer throw with a season-best toss of 57.88 meters.
- In the heptathlon, Ani Boghossian-James took second in the 200m (26.53), eighth in the shot put (9.18 meters), second in the 100 meter hurdles (15.01) and third in the high jump (1.58 meters).
- Denée Hibbert finished fifth in the long jump with a mark of 6.50 meters.
- Hayley Horvath threepeated as the pole vault champion with a height of 4.00 meters. Millie Klefsaas followed very closely behind in second place with a mark of 3.80 meters.
