36,000 FEET IN THE AIR – Taking the program's second international trip in the
Shawn Nadelen Era, the Towson University men's lacrosse team boarded a bus in the early morning hours of June 1.
The eventual destination: a small surf community on the Pacific Ocean side of Costa Rica, a town called Jaco.
The Tiger bus rolled out of West Village at 3:45 a.m., making its way to the nation's capital and Reagan National Airport. From there, the 7 a.m. flight took its talents to South Beach for a two hour layover in Miami.
At the stroke of noon, boarding began for a flight bound for the Costa Rican Capital City, San Jose.
This was the first trip to Central America for many on the trip, and the first-ever international trip for several members of the travel party as well.
"Going to a different country with all of my teammates, full of activities like zip lining and white water rafting, I thought it would be a special trip," said junior goalkeeper Evan Long. "My sister has visited Costa Rica and she said that it's going to be an amazing trip."
Between San Jose and Jaco, the two team buses ran into a flooded rain as the rainy seasons kicked off late in May across Central America. The buses waited about 30 minutes at the Oregon Trail-style river crossing before heading up and over the volcanic mountains and down to the coast.
It will be an action packed week on the Pacific coast for the Tigers, filled with adventures like ziplining, surf lessons, whitewater rafting, a lacrosse clinic with local kids, and plenty of comradery on the beach. The trip culminates with a return bus ride to San Jose to take on the Costa Rican senior national team, playing in the newly-created, up-and-down style of lacrosse called Sixes.
