Pura Vida: Surfs Up!

RIGHT ON THE OCEAN – It was day two in Jaco, Costa Rica for the Towson University men's lacrosse team. Hiking, views and surfing highlighted the afternoon.

Things started early for the Tigers, working through a two-hour time change. Many members of the travel party hit the black sand beach adjacent to the hotel and got the blood moving with body weight exercises, open water swimming and running on the beach that would make Rocky and Apollo jealous.

After lunch, the party split in half, sending the juniors and seniors on a hike up El Miro, an abandoned mansion come observation deck with a view north along Jaco's beach, taking in the mountains in the distance.

Meanwhile the freshmen and sophomores hit the ocean for surf lessons right on the beach. Plenty of Tigers figured out the trick to get up on the board and before long were riding the waves back in.

"It was magical," said sophomore Austin Ducommun. "Working hard all year long and then getting the chance to hangout with everyone is such a thrill. I've done a lot of skateboarding and snowboarding, so it was a quick transition to surfing. El Miro and seeing what Costa Rica looks like from up there was awesome.

"I'm not the biggest fan of sweating in all this humidity though!" said the British Columbia native.

After an hour or so, the groups flip flopped and the junior/senior group went surfing while the younger crowd enjoyed the hike up El Miro.

Dinner and comradery were on tap in the evening before an early start on Friday for ziplining, a canopy tour and a soccer clinic with a local youth group.
