TOWSON, Md. – Coming off its first-ever Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) regular season title, the Towson University men's basketball team will play a 13-game 2022-23 non-conference schedule, which includes home games against two in-state rivals, a trip to Clemson, a neutral site match-up with Northern Iowa and year one of home-and-home series versus UMass and Bryant.
Game times will be announced later. Towson is set for three home games at SECU Arena in the non-league slate.
Men's basketball season tickets start at $110. For more information regarding tickets for Towson events, call the Athletics ticket office at 410-704-3330/3331 or email dkogok@towson.edu.
Last season, the Tigers went 25-9 (15-3 CAA) and earned a berth in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).
Pat Skerry's squad returns its top four scorers, including all-league players
Cam Holden, Nicolas Timberlake and
Charles Thompson as well as
Jason Gibson, who shot 43 percent from 3-point distance in 2021-22. All four have a chance to join the 1,000-point club: Timberlake (938 career points), Gibson (719), Thompson (633) and Holden (460 in one season). Only 28 players in the program history have reached the milestone.
"We have put together an incredibly challenging schedule for our guys that will present many opportunities," said Skerry, who begins his 12
th season as head coach. "This was the most difficult time we have ever had in comprising a schedule. My veterans know and wanted to play as hard a schedule as possible, regardless of location, in order to get ready for CAA play, and we delivered on that. We have had a great summer, and after this break, we look forward to resuming workouts in September."
Towson will begin the year at home vs. UAlbany on Nov. 7. The Tigers opened last season with an impressive 21-point victory over the Great Danes. Holden (15 points, 11 rebounds) had the first of 11 double-doubles in the win.
Towson will be away from home for the next three games, beginning with a trip to Amherst to play at UMass on Nov. 10 followed by a trip to Philadelphia to play at Penn on Nov. 13 then to Greensboro to face UNCG on Nov. 17. Towson had home victories over Penn and UNCG a season ago. The game against UMass will be the first between the schools since 2011.
The Tigers return home on Nov. 22 to face Baltimore rival Coppin State. Skerry's teams have won five straight against the Eagles, including an 89-75 victory last December when Gibson scored a then career-best 24 points and tied Gary Neal's record for made three-pointers (eight).
From Nov. 25-27, Towson will play in the Savannah Invitational in Georgia, where the Tigers will play Mercer and South Alabama for the first time in school history. A third opponent will be named later. South Alabama won 21 games in 2021-22.
Towson will be on the road to begin December. On Dec. 2, the Tigers will be on Long Island to face LIU. Holden, Thompson and Timberlake combined for 43 points and 22 rebounds in a 72-63 win last December.
For the first time in 35 years, Towson will head to historic Littlejohn Coliseum on Dec. 7 to play Clemson. Towson dropped a 71-61 decision to Clemson on Dec. 2, 1987. That Clemson team featured future NBA players Elden Campbell and Dale Davis.
The Black & Gold come back to SECU to host the Naval Academy on Dec. 11. Last season, Timberlake scored 24 points in a 69-52 victory over a Navy team that won 21 games. The Tigers lead the all-time series 9-5.
The Tigers will visit the Windy City on Dec. 17 to play in the inaugural Legends of Basketball Chicago Hoops Showcase, taking on Northern Iowa at the United Center. This will mark Towson's first ever meeting against UNI, one of the nation's top mid-majors. The Panthers won 21 games a year ago and advanced to the second round of the NIT.
The non-league schedule wraps up on Dec. 22 with a trip to Rhode Island to face defending Northeast Conference champion Bryant. The Bulldogs went 22-10 a season ago and advanced to the NCAA tournament. The two teams have never played.
The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) schedule will be announced this week.
