TOWSON, Md. – Former Towson University women's lacrosse player and 2015 Canadian Lacrosse National Team member Emily Gillingham has been selected to be enshrined in the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame, announced by the organization last month.
Gillingham will be inducted into the 2023 Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame class as a part of the U19 World Championship Team along with 11 other individual inductees on November 5 in Ontario, Canada.
In 2015, Gillingham was as a member of the first Women's Lacrosse Canadian National team to win a gold medal in the World Championships after breaking U.S.A.'s four game win streak in a 9-8 victory following an exhilarating back-and-forth game.
Looking to beat the Canadians for the second time in the tournament U.S.A. quickly claimed a 3-1 lead early in the game. Canada responded by scoring four of the final five goals in the first half, one of which was a free position shot with 19 seconds left, to take the lead and end the half 5-4.
With 26:43 to play U.S.A. led 6-5 after scoring the first two goals of the second half. Canada went on a 3-0 run to reclaim the lead, sitting at 8-6 with just under 17 minutes remaining. U.S.A. attempted to bounce back, scoring two of the following three goals to pull within one, 9-8 with a couple minutes left on the clock. Canada was able to block two shots from U.S.A., ultimately claiming gold at the conclusion of the game.
Gillingham played as a key reserve in the championship game and finished the tournament with seven goals, two caused turnovers, four draw controls and five ground balls total.
At Towson, Gillingham started in 71 games, playing primarily midfield. The Ontario, Canada native was named to the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) All-Rookie team (2015), the Preseason All-CAA Team (2017), the Second Team All-CAA (2017), the First Team All-CAA (2018) and the IWLCA Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team (2018) .
During her senior year Gillingham led the Tigers with 54 goals, which is currently tied for eighth highest in program history. She also helped the team tie the program record for most wins in a season (16) and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I Championship. In 2018 Gillingham was drafted 18th overall by the Philadelphia Fire of the Women's Professional Lacrosse League.
