TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team welcomed rival UMBC to TU Arena to start the 2023-24 season. The Tigers (1-0) defeated the Retrievers (0-1) 76-72 in the first edition of the Charm City Hoops Classic.
Alexia Nelson led Towson with 15 points on 6-of-9 (66.7%) shooting and six rebounds.
Gabby Scott finished with ten points, eight rebounds and three steals.

- Towson had 17 offensive rebounds compared to five for UMBC.
- Towson's defense forced 24 turnovers, including nine steals that led to 22 points off turnovers.

- The Tigers jumped out to a 5-2 lead, getting baskets from India Johnston and Alexia Nelson.
- UMBC responded with a 9-2 run led by Laycee Drake's two layups.
- Towson tied the score at 13 apiece after a 6-2 run, but UMBC's Jordon Lewis made her second three-pointer of the quarter to have a 16-13 lead.
- Patricia Anumgba hit a late mid-range jumper to trail 16-15 heading into the second quarter.
- Gabby Scott started the second quarter by hitting a three from atop the key to give Towson the lead back.
- The teams traded baskets back and forth with Johnston and Anumgba making jumpers 24 seconds apart to give Towson a 27-23 advantage going into the media timeout.

- Towson maintained a consistent lead throughout the third quarter, but a late UMBC jumper cut the lead down to five.
- The Retrievers opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back baskets, but Scott responded with her second three to have a 57-53 lead.
- The Tigers had a seven-point edge after five straight points from Quinzia Fulmore.
- UMBC cut the deficit to three, but two free throws from Kylie Kornegay-Lucas and a driving layup from Anumgba gave the Tigers a 68-61 lead with 3:47 left.
- The Retrievers went on 9-1 run led by Carmen Yanez's five points to take a 70-69 lead with 1:42 remaining.
- On the next possession, Kornegay-Lucas drained a three from the right wing to give the Tigers the lead right back.
- With a minute left, UMBC tied the score at 72 on a layup.
- Ten seconds later Nelson made a driving layup to take a two-point advantage.
- UMBC missed a three-pointer on its next possession as Nelson found Fulmore for a layup to seal the game, 76-72.
Inside the Numbers vs UMBC:
- Gabby Scott finished with a career-high eight rebounds, which included six offensive boards. Scott also had a career-high three steals.
- Towson picked up their ninth straight victory over UMBC and fifth consecutive at TU Arena.
- Five Tigers finished with double figures tonight with nine players making a basket.
