Towson Women's Tennis Set for a Trio of Matches This Week

TOWSON, Md.- The Towson University Tigers tennis team is set to play three matches this week, including two matches at the Tiger Tennis Complex. The Tigers host newcomers Hampton on Monday then welcome Loyola on Thursday for the Sol Schwartz Save College Tennis Day. The Black & Gold finish off the week with Delaware on Saturday. All of the matches will start at 3 p.m.

Highly Awarded
Sarah Pospischill was selected as the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women's Tennis Player of the Week. Pospischill is the first Tiger to win CAA Player of the Week since Phoebe Collins won the honor in 2019. She went 2-0 at No. 1 singles to lead Towson to victories over Rider (4-2) and CAA foe Monmouth (5-2) last week.
 
The senior from Reisenburg, Austria, defeated Rider's Leila Koster, 6-2, 6-4, as the Black & Gold swept the top three singles spots. She followed with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 win over Monmouth's Ann Spurka as Towson again won the top three spots. Pospischill went 1-0 at No. 1 doubles, picking up a win against the duo of Koster/Agnese Ceccarelli from Rider 6-2.
 
Last Time Out
The Black & Gold traveled to Philadelphia to play Saint Joseph's for a midweek match. Towson dropped the match 5-2 to the Hawks with the Tigers picking up singles wins from Sania Suchinsky and Olivia Rothfeld, while Sarah Pospischill and Suchinsky won their doubles match. The match against Saint Francis U was canceled due to weather concerns.
 
Schedule Update 
The Tigers have a couple of changes to their spring schedule. The Black & Gold have added CAA newcomers North Carolina A&T and Hampton to the schedule. The Tigers will play the Aggies on March 24th in Greensboro while hosting Hampton at the Tiger Tennis Complex on April 10th. Towson also added Loyola on April 13th at the Tiger Tennis Complex.
 
Fall Recap 
Towson competed in three tournaments during the fall season. The Tigers opened play at the Tribe Invitational and picked up a double win from the duo of Antonia Lawson/Olivia Rothfeld. The team then competed in the Bedford Cup, where Rothfeld won her singles bracket over former Tiger Sissi Axelsson. Sarah Pospischill finished as a runner-up in her flight, falling to Sifa Butcher 6-4, 6-3. In doubles, the duo of Lawson & Rothfeld won their bracket over Morgan State's Lauryn Hall/Averiana Mitchell. The final tournament Towson participated in was the Fall Tiger Classic. The Tigers picked up 14 wins across three days of play, with Jessica Assenmacher winning two matches in her final two games as a Tiger.   

Hampton Scouting Report
The Lady Pirates have accumulated a 6-10 record this spring and a 0-2 league record. Hampton fell 6-1 to Loyola to start the season, then won three consecutive matches which included 4-0 wins over Coppin State and Johns Hopkins. The Lady Pirates lost their next five matches including a 5-2 loss to Elon. Hampton defeated Saint Joseph's 4-3, then fell to Queens College 5-2. The Lady Pirates bounced back with a 6-1 victory over Belmont Abbey College but were swept in the following three matches. In their most recent match, Hampton defeated Wagner 6-1.
 
Loyola Scouting Report
The Greyhounds bring in a 7-11 record with a 2-3 mark in the Patriot League. Loyola lost its first two matches 5-2 to St. Bonaventure and George Mason but bounced back with a 6-1 win over Hampton. The Greyhounds lost to fellow CAA member Monmouth 4-3, then won the following two matches against Chestnut Hill and Norfolk State 4-3. The Greyhounds were swept by Bucknell and Hillsborough Community College. Loyola defeated Eastern Florida State College 5-2, but lost its next four matches, including two Patriot League matches to Lehigh (4-3) and Army (4-1). The Greyhounds won two of their next three matches by sweeping Holy Cross and Coppin State. Loyola split their last two matches, losing 6-1 to Delaware State, but winning 4-3 against Colgate. The Greyhounds play two matches earlier in the week before playing Towson with a Monday match against Rider and a Wednesday matchup against Navy.
 
Delaware Scouting Report
The Blue Hens have an impressive 17-3 mark and a 5-1 CAA record. Delaware won its opener 5-2 over Cornell, then lost its next two matches to Syracuse (5-2) and Penn (4-3). Delaware won its next 11 matches with ten of the wins finishing 6-1 or 7-0. The Blue Hens had their win streak snapped by William & Mary 4-3. The Blue Hens currently have a five-match winning streak including three wins against CAA foes. Delaware plays three matches before Saturday's match against the Tigers with matches against Delaware State and Morgan State on Monday, then a CAA match versus Drexel on Wednesday.
