Fairfax, VA – For the first time in program history, the Towson University track & field team won the Outdoor Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships with a total of 89.5 points. The previous highest ECACs finish for Towson was second place, accomplished in 2019 at Princeton University. The Tigers outplaced two Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opponents, topping runner up Hampton (74 points) and third place finisher William & Mary (55 points).
Day two efforts were heavily supported by three first place finishes from
Cristal Cuervo,
Fatimah Owens and
Manie Mevo in their respective events. The Tigers also picked up three new school records and multiple personal records (PRs).
Cuervo was awarded Most Outstanding Player for her performances this weekend as well.
The 4x100 relay (
Ty'Liyah Hannah,
Cristal Cuervo,
Sydney Tucker,
Maya Tucker) gave the Tigers early momentum, placing second in the event with a school record time of 45.28. This marks the second time this season that the record has been broken by these four athletes as it was initially broken at last weekend's outdoor Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship.
Maya Tucker placed second in the 100m dash for the second consecutive meet, clocking 11.71.
Cristal Cuervo joined her on the podium after lowering her PR earned in yesterday's prelims, running an 11.75. The pair then went on to place one-two in the 200m dash a couple events later. Panama native Cuervo claimed the ECAC Championship title with a PR and new school record time of 23.29, which is also the Panama National Record. Previous 200m dash school record holder
Maya Tucker was the runner up with a 23.47, which is the second fastest time in program history.
Ty'Liyah Hannah competed in the event as well, finishing in 24.97.
In the triple jump senior
Aliyah Anderson closed out her collegiate career with a PR of 12.20m, which ranks third all-time in school history. Freshman
Manie Mevo won the event for the second consecutive meet with a PR and school record mark of 12.84m. The Maryland native also posted the highest finish in the event at this meet in Towson history.
Fatimah Owens was the discus champion with a toss of 50.72m, a new PR for the junior by nearly 2.0m. Owens' performance is the highest finish in the event at ECACs in program history.
Georgia Coleman competed in the event as well, finishing with a mark of 44.93m.
"This really is history in the making," head coach
Consandria Walker-Hall commented. "It's our first ever ECAC outdoor championship and we achieved it with just 11 brave young women. It started with our senior Georgia throwing a lifetime PR and winning the Hammer Throw in the first event of the weekend. From there, the momentum just carried from one event to the next. Lifetime best after lifetime best stacked on top of one another and even with a small group, the Towson chants were the loudest in the stadium. This speaks volumes of the core group that we have and how bright our future is. It's a great day to be a Tiger."
