TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University athletics department had a strong 2022-23 season, picking up 95 points in the Learfield Directors' Cup standings.
Towson finished first among Greater Baltimore schools in the Learfield Cup standings and third among Maryland schools, only behind FBS programs Maryland and Navy. Towson also finished tied for third among Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) programs. Overall, Towson finished tied for 171
st across all of Division I.
Three Towson teams contributed to the department's Learfield standings, led by women's gymnastics. Gymnastics won the program's first-ever East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) title and picked up a berth in the NCAA Tournament in the third consecutive year for 37 points in the standings. The team finished 34
th overall in the Road to Nationals rankings.
Brian Benzing's performance in the NCAA Swimming & Diving Tournament helped Towson pick up 33 points in the standings. He earned Honorable Mention All-America recognition with a 15
th overall finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, also adding a 48
th place finish in the 200 individual medley.
Volleyball's fourth consecutive CAA Tournament championship notched 25 points in the standings for Towson. The volleyball team earned an 8-seed in the NCAA Tournament, solidifying its place as a top-32 program this season, finishing 29-2 overall.
The Learfield Directors' Cup is a program that honors institutions maintaining a broad-based program, achieving success in many sports, both men's and women's. Points are tallied in 19 sports, four of which must be baseball, men's and women's basketball, and women's volleyball, then the next highest 15 for each institution. Points are earned for finishes in the postseason, with determinations given in bracketed, non-bracketed and individual sports.
