Towson Uses Strong Second Half in 90-58 Win Against the University of Toronto

TORONTO -- Towson University picked up a 90-58 win against the University of Toronto to open their five-game Canada tour. Four different Tigers hit double figures led by 15 points from Christian May.

The Tigers shot over 50 percent from the floor in the second half to pull away from the Varsity Blues on Thursday. Towson dominated the paint scoring 66 of their 90 points in the lane.

KEY STATS:
  • Christian May led the Tigers with 15 points on 7-12 shooting. Newcomers Tomiwa Sulaiman and Messiah Jones reached double figures with 12 and 11 respectively. Jones added eight rebounds with Sulaiman collecting seven boards.
  • Freshman Tyler Tejada had 10 points in the win.
  • Towson shot 53.4 percent from the floor and forced 17 turnovers.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Christian May got things started with a slam on the opening possession.
  • Both teams would struggle from there, but a Messiah Jones putback bucket gave the Tigers the lead back. That would ignite a 5-0 run, capped by a Marcus Watson slam to give Towson an 11-8 lead.
  • Towson and Toronto would go back and forth exchanging turns with the lead, but the Tigers lead 19-17 after the first quarter.
  • The Tigers would waste little time to start the second ripping off a 7-0 run with Rahdir Hicks drilling a corner three to force a timeout.
  • Towson would continue to roll all quarter using a 21-5 run over a nine-minute span to pull ahead by 16, their largest lead of the half after Tyler Tejada hit a three to beat the shot clock.
  • The Tigers would take a 41-28 lead into half after shooting 49 percent from the floor and scoring 28 points in the paint.
  • Messiah Jones led nine Tigers in scoring with nine points.
  • Towson kept their foot on the gas in the third quarter shooting a blistering 50 percent from the floor.
  • Christian May scored the first seven points for the Tigers in the quarter including two thunderous dunks.
  • Towson would keep up the pressure in the fourth, taking care of Toronto, 90-58 on Thursday.
