Staton and Kornegay-Lucas Lead Towson Women’s Basketball Past Charleston

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Towson University women's basketball team took on the No. 3 seed Charleston Cougars in the quarterfinals of the CAA Women's Basketball Championship presented by Primis. The Tigers (20-10) defeated the Cougars (21-9) 69-60 to advance to the semifinals.
 
Anasia Staton led the Tigers with a career-high 16 points, six rebounds and three assists off the bench. Kylie Kornegay-Lucas earned her sixth double-double of the season with 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.

  • The Tigers had the edge in the rebounding battle, 49-42.
  • Towson finished with 17 assists, which is tied for the second most this season.
  • The Tigers totaled 32 points off the bench tonight.

  • The teams went back-and-forth to start the first quarter, exchanging the lead five times before an Anaiah Jenkins triple giving the Tigers a 14-12 edge.
  • Towson grew the lead to nine after an Alexia Nelson jumper and another Jenkins three-pointer.
  • The Cougars went on a 7-0 run to even the score, but a last second India Johnston jumper gave the Tigers a 21-19 lead.
  • The Tigers opened the second quarter with a 9-2 run led by Quinzia Fulmore's five points to force a Charleston timeout.
  • Towson stretched the lead to 12 midway through the second quarter.
  • The teams closed out the quarter trading baskets with the Tigers taking a 38-28 advantage into halftime.
  • The third quarter started with the teams battling back-and-forth, until an 11-0 run by the Cougars cut the deficit to three.
  • Anasia Staton scored Towson's final five points of the third quarter, which included a corner three as time expired to give the Tigers a 54-46 edge.
  • Kylie Kornegay-Lucas opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer, but Charleston went on a 5-0 run to reduce the lead to six.
  • The Tigers responded with a 6-2 run to regain a double-digit advantage with 3:03 left in the fourth quarter.
  • The Cougars tried to spark a late comeback, but Towson had an answer each time as the Tigers won 69-60 over Charleston.
