Late Run Lifts Hampton over Towson Women’s Basketball

HAMPTON, Va. – The Towson University women's basketball team returned to the road to face the Hampton Pirates in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play at the Hampton Convocation Center on Friday evening. The Pirates (5-13, 1-6 CAA) closed the fourth quarter on an 18-7 run over the final 7:05 to go on to win 61-58 over the Tigers (4-13, 2-4 CAA).
 
Kayla Morris led the team with a season-high 14 points on 6-10 shooting, adding seven rebounds. Khady Leye recorded her ninth game this season with double-digit points, finishing with 11.

  • Hampton had 11 turnovers to Towson's 30 on the evening. The Pirates scored 26 points off those turnovers to Towson's five.

How it Happened
  • Towson started slow in the first quarter as Morris' triple with 2:17 in the period was the first Tiger bucket of the game.
  • Morris hit the other bucket for the Black & Gold in the quarter, making it a 15-5 score after ten minutes of play.
  • The Black & Gold responded by starting the second quarter on a 15-0 run to take a 20-15 lead with 4:29 remaining in the half.
  • The quarter ended 7-7, giving the Tigers a 27-22 lead at the halftime break.
  • Of the seven Towson field goals scored in the third quarter, six came from different players. Leye had two buckets in the quarter, adding five points. India Johnston, Semaya Turner, Deja Bristol and Shariah Baynes each added two-point baskets in the quarter. Morris hit her second triple of the game in the quarter. Leye's final layup with two seconds left in the quarter made it a 43-36 game.
  • A Hampton triple with 3:55 left in regulation gave the Pirates a 52-51 lead.
  • Back-to-back buckets from Turner and Anasia Staton gave the Tigers a three-point lead at 55-52.
  • The Pirates retook the lead at 56-55 with 1:23 on the clock.
  • Turner tied the game on a free throw with 58 seconds remaining.
  • After a made Hampton bucket and a miss at the other end, the Tigers were forced to foul.
  • The Pirates went 3-for-4 on two trips to the free throw line to push the lead to 61-56 with 11 seconds remaining.
  • Leye hit a layup with four seconds left to cut it the deficit to three, but the Tigers were outlasted by the Pirates at the final horn, 61-58.
