TOWSON, Md. – Towson University head football coach
Pete Shinnick has announced that Adam Neugebauer and Tyler Phelps have joined the coaching staff, beginning with the upcoming 2025 campaign.
Neugebauer will serve as the team's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach while Phelps will be the team's new tight ends coach.
"We had a lot of interest for both of these of these positions, which speaks to how Towson Football is viewed across the nation," said Shinnick. "I am very excited to add two coaches who bring great energy and knowledge to our staff while also adding to our culture."
The Tigers had a strong 2024 campaign, earning their first seven-win season since 2019 and winning CAA year since 2018 in the second season under Shinnick. Towson finished 7-5 overall and 5-3 in the CAA, finishing the year on a three-game winning streak and notching a victory over then top-10 William & Mary. The Tigers have earned a .500 or better record in the CAA five of the last six fall seasons.
Neugebauer comes to Towson after two seasons at McNeese State. From year one to year two, the Cowboys improved by five victories. He led an offense that was first in the Southland Conference with 191.7 rushing yards per game and 26 rushing touchdowns. Before McNeese State, Neugebauer was the offensive coordinator at Slippery Rock University from 2019-22, helping the team go 22-4 from 2021-22 while averaging 42.8 points and 491 yards per game, including 95 passing touchdowns. His quarterback, Roland Rivers III, won the Harlon Hill Trophy for DII Player of the Year in 2019. He has also had stops at Georgetown and Tiffin and was a First Team All-American as a quarterback at West Virginia Wesleyan.
Shinnick on Neugebauer: "Adam Neugebauer has coordinated highly explosive offenses, and I have been following his career for a long time. When he was at Slippery Rock University, we saw his offense a few times in the playoffs. I was always impressed with how they attacked other teams. He is a great fit and I am excited to have him coaching our quarterbacks and coordinating our offense."
Phelps has spent the last two years as the quarterbacks coach and academic coordinator at Shinnick's former team of West Florida (UWF). He helped the Argos average over 32 points a game in each season and combine for 15 victories in that span, going over 5,000 passing yards in those two years. A two-time All-Pioneer Football League Team honoree at Davidson College, Phelps played in 41 games from 2017-21, tallying up 4,635 passing yards and 34 passing touchdowns.
Shinnick on Phelps: "I have known Tyler Phelps since he was in high school as we recruited him to UWF. I have always known he would be a great coach. How he managed the games as a high school quarterback and then while he was in college doing the same thing. He is a very impressive young coach; I am really excited to bring him to Towson to coach our tight ends. The past two seasons while he was at UWF, he got a great understanding of what the Arete culture looks like as well as some of the things we will be doing offensively."
