Towson Football Fourth Quarter Comeback Attempt Falls Just Short at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Towson University football team scored two late touchdowns with two-point conversions to pull within one score with 3:37 left but came up just short in a 27-19 defeat at Stony Brook on Long Island.

Towson (3-5, 1-3 CAA) rallied with two touchdowns in its final pair of fourth quarter drives at Stony Brook (4-4, 2-2 CAA) as Nathan Kent got passing scores in the end zone corner to John Dunmore and Jaceon Doss, but did not get a final drive attempt in hopes of tying the game.

Key Stats:
  • Towson earned 227 passing yards in the game to Stony Brook's 176, whereas Stony Brook had the edge in rushing yards 235-42.  There were no turnovers in the game.
  • Entering to start the second half, Nathan Kent was 10-for-22 for 183 yards and two touchdowns, adding 20 rushing yards.  The top target was John Dunmore, who had seven catches for 119 yards, a touchdown and a two-point rushing conversion.
  • Xavier Terry led the defense with 12 tackles.  Alfred Thomas also had 12 tackles, adding a sack.
  • For Stony Brook, Quinn Boyd was 19-for-29 for 176 yards and a score.  Roland Dempster rushed 40 times for 181 yards and two touchdowns.  Anthony Ferrelli led the Seawolves with five tackles.
How it Happened
  • Stony Brook won the toss and elected to defer, with Towson going three and out, but then forcing a three and out on the Seawolf offense as Myles Brodie broke up a pass on second down.  Towson went to the air as Andrew Indorf converted a third down on a 14-yard dart to John Dunmore, but a punt was forced.  MarQeese Dietz brought the ball to the Towson 35 for a 42-yard return.  On a short field, Stony Brook quickly got to the Towson 2.  Towson walled up on the first two run attempts to the end zone, but on fourth down on the one, Roland Dempster ran up the gut for the score.  Stony Brook led 7-0 with 7:32 left in the first.
  • Towson again went three-and-out and punted.  A pass and rush brought Stony Brook into Towson territory, where the Tiger pass rush forced incomplete passes and a punt.  Towson took over on its own seven-yard line.  Despite a five-yard opening rush by Kemarrion Battles, Towson had to punt without a first down, setting up the home team just outside midfield.
  • Just before the second quarter, Aaron Clark burst through the line and took down Dempster for a four-yard loss, but Stony Brook converted the third and 13 with a 14-yard pass to Dietz.  Towson tried to wall up on fourth and one, but Dempster got up the middle for two yards into the red zone.  Stony Brook converted third down on a short run and got a touchdown, but was called back on pass interference.  Michael Mannino hit the 24-yard field goal attempt as Stony Brook led 10-0, 8:24 in the second.
  • Following a Towson three-and-out, another drive with short runs and passes brought the Seawolves down the field.  A pass interference penalty converted a third down and placed Stony Brook on the Towson 2, where Dempster scored the next play.  Stony Brook led 17-0 with 2:34 in the second.
  • Towson attempted a final drive of the first as Indorf hit Jaceon Doss for 26 yards just across midfield.  Past the two-minute timeout, a rush and two incompletions forced a punt.  Stony Brook led 17-0 at the break.
  • Into the second half, Stony Brook converted one third down but not the next as Kaden White forced down the receiver three yards short of the first.  A punt was fair caught at the Towson 10.  Nathan Kent entered at quarterback, but another three-and-out led to a punt as Dietz returned the ball to just inside Towson territory.  A couple of 12+ yard passes brought the Seawolves into the red zone.  Twice Stony Brook converted on fourth down, the second on fourth and goal from the two to score a touchdown from a pass to Dez Williams, to lead 24-0 with 5:55 to go in the third.
  • Towson played a hurry-up offense and started to gain ground with Kent's quick passes to Dunmore and Battles to get outside midfield.  A 40-yard pass down the sideline to Dunmore got Towson to the Stony Brook 12, but the drive stopped there.  Caden Williams knocked down the 31-yard field goal to put Towson on the board as the Tigers trailed 24-3 with 3:45 left in the third.
  • Stony Brook continued to convert third downs on runs heading into the fourth quarter.  The Seawolves ran down some clock, but Towson stopped Stony Brook on third and goal as Xavier Terry made the one-on-one tackle four yards short of the end zone.  Mannino hit the 22-yard field goal to make it 27-3 Stony Brook with 10:23 left.
  • Kent led the charge on the next drive with a couple of scrambles and an 11-yard pass to Lukkas Londono for a couple of first downs.  Facing fourth and eight on the Stony Brook 16, Kent floated the pass complete to Dunmore in the end zone for the touchdown.  A trick play on the two-point conversion was successful as Jaceon Doss passed to CJ Schaeffer.  Towson trailed 27-11 with 7:19 to play.
  • Towson forced a three-and-out, capped by Alfred Thomas sacking the quarterback on third down.  Kent drove Towson down the field with third down conversions to Kahseim Phillips and Londono.  On third and 10 from the Stony Brook 29, Kent found Doss in the corner of the end zone for the score.  Dunmore got the rush and scored the two-point conversion to make it 27-19 Stony Brook with 3:37 remaining.  But, Dempster converted three first downs on runs as Stony Brook ran out the clock and won 27-19.
