Sjökvist & Khalil Combine for 36 in Towson's Win over Stetson

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team hosted Stetson on Tuesday evening in the first game of a Towson Basketball Veterans Day doubleheader.
 
Towson (2-1) found its footing in the second half of the first quarter against Stetson (2-2), ending the period on a 16-0 run over the final 7:17 of play. Coming out of the halftime break, the Tigers outscored the Hatters 36-13 in the third quarter and went on to win, 76-54.
 
Key Stats
  • Towson shot 36.7% (11-30) from deep on the night while holding Stetson to a 21.4% (3-14) mark.
  • The Hatters had 18 turnovers, as opposed to the Tigers' 10. The Black & Gold scored 18 points off those turnovers compared to Stetson's eight.
  • Towson scored 13 fast break points over Stetson's zero.
 
How it Happened
  • Stetson opened the game with a 5-2 lead through the first 2:43 of play. The Tigers followed that with 16 unanswered points to close the quarter. India Johnston and Hannah Dereje led the team with four points each at the end of the period.
  • Each team scored five points on consecutive possessions just less than two minutes into the second quarter, taking the score to 23-10 in favor of Towson.
  • The Hatters followed that with an 8-2 run over the next 3:02 of play, pulling within two with just under five minutes left in the first half.
  • Johnston and Kayla Morris each hit layups in the back half of the second quarter as Towson took a 29-22 lead to the break.
  • The Black & Gold came out firing to start the third quarter, scoring 12 unanswered points through the first 2:24 of play. Khalil had eight points in the run after missing much of the second quarter in foul trouble.
  • Khalil and Sjökvist hit the Tigers' next five shots, with Sjökvist's three with 3:30 on the clock giving TU a 53-29 lead.
  • Sjökvist and Khalil posted 14 points and 13 points, respectively, in the quarter, giving Towson a 65-35 lead with 10 minutes to play.
  • Stetson's first 11 points of the fourth were scored by Sorrentino and Garcia-Escribano, cutting the deficit to 23 with 5:46 on the clock.
  • Khalil (2), Thalia Shepard (3) and Semaya Turner (2) each scored over the final five minutes of play as Towson topped Stetson 76-54.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Zoli Khalil finished one point shy of her career-high, finishing with 20 on the day. She was 8-10 from the field and 3-3 from deep.
  • Tilda Sjökvist finished with 16 points on 5-9 shooting from the field and 4-8 from behind the arc. The senior added eight assists, two rebounds and a steal.
  • Kayla Morris anchored the Tigers on the defensive end, posting nine rebounds, three blocks and two steals. The Harlem native added six points on the other end.
 
Next Game
The Tigers will trek to College Park to face No. 9 Maryland on Thursday at 7 p.m.
