Four Tigers in Double Figures Fuel Road Win over UMBC

CATONSVILLE, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team faced cross-county foe UMBC on Sunday evening at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.
 
After a tightly contested first half, Towson (4-2) trailed UMBC (2-4) 30-29 at the break. The Tigers scored 22 unanswered points over a seven-minute stretch late in the third and early in the fourth quarter to secure the 71-64 victory over the Retrievers.

  • Towson outshot UMBC 44.4% (8-18) to 20.0% (4-20) from behind the arc in the game.
  • The Tigers' 22-0 run over seven minutes in the second half flipped an 11 point-deficit into an 11-point fourth quarter lead.
  • The Black & Gold went 13-16 from the free throw line in the final quarter to maintain their winning margin.
 
How it Happened
  • Towson opened the game with a 6-2 early lead before giving up eight straight points to UMBC, giving the Retrievers a 10-6 edge.
  • Zoli Khalil, Tilda Sjökvist, Kayla Morris and India Johnston all hit layups to close the quarter in the 20-14 hole.
  • UMBC got the lead up to as many as eight in the second before the Tigers scored seven unanswered points to cut it back down to one.
  • UMBC extended their lead back to four before Thalia Shepard's second triple of the quarter with 1:52 left on the clock cut it back down to one.
  • Semaya Turner's made free throw with 0:28 left in the half sent the Tigers into halftime down 30-29.
  • The Retrievers came out of the half on a 17-6 run to start the third.
  • The Tigers scored eight unanswered points over the final two minutes of the quarter. Sjökvist scored hit two threes in the final minutes.
  • Towson continued that run in the fourth, scoring 14 unanswered points over the first five minutes of the quarter to go up 58-47. Khalil had five, Johnston four, Sjökvist three and Morris two.
  • After the Retrievers shrunk the TU lead to six, Johnston's made layup with 2:03 to go put the Tigers back up 11.
  • Towson hit six free throws over the final minutes of the game for the 71-64 road win over UMBC.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Zoli Khalil led the team with 16 points in the game. The junior has finished in double figures all six games this season.
  • Tilda Sjökvist finished with 14 points, including 11 in the second half, adding three assists. The senior has posted at least three assists in five of six games played this season.
  • Kayla Morris came into the game averaging 3.60 blocks per game, good for second among all Division I players. The redshirt senior improved on that average tonight, posting four in the game.
 
Next Game
The Tigers will face Georgetown on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at McDonough Arena just outside of the nation's capital.
