Staton, Bristol Lead the Way in Tigers’ Wire-to-Wire Victory over Stony Brook

TOWSON, Md. –  The Towson University women's basketball team hosted Stony Brook in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play Sunday afternoon at TU Arena. The Tigers (8-16, 6-7 CAA) went wire-to-wire in the game for a 59-52 win over Stony Brook (11-13, 6-7 CAA).
 
Deja Bristol led the Tigers with a season-high 16 points, adding five rebounds. Anasia Staton finished with 15 points on 46.2% (6-13) shooting from the field, adding seven rebounds.

  • Towson held the shooting edges from the field (42.3%-34.7%) and from three (46.2%-22.2%) in the game.

How it Happened
  • Bristol started the game on a torrid pace, posting nine of the Tigers' first 11 points of the contest.
  • Following a Gonzalez jumper from Stony Brook, Towson closed the opening ten minutes of play on a 6-0 run.  India Johnston and Staton each scored three to give TU a 17-9 lead at the first quarter break.
  • The Seawolves began the second quarter on an 11-5 run over the first 5:47 to cut the Tiger lead to two.
  • Staton followed with made jumpers on back-to-back possessions before Stony Brook's Ware hit a pair of free throws in the closing minute of the half. The Tigers took a four-point lead into the half at 26-22.
  • The Black & Gold began the second half on a 7-3 run over the first 3:15 of the third.
  • The Seawolves held an 11-8 edge over the final stretch of the quarter, pushing the Tiger lead to five.
  • A pair of free throws and a layup cut the Stony Brook deficit to one before Staton buried a jumper to push the lead back to three.
  • Another Ware layup cut it back to one before a 9-0 Tiger run built a ten-point cushion with 3:51 remaining. Khady Leye had a pair of layups, Bristol a pair of free throws and Staton a triple in the stretch.
  • Johnston hit a jumper and three on back-to-back Towson possessions before a Bristol lay in extended the lead to 12.
  • Stony Brook hit three foul shots on two trips to the line and a layup over the final minute, but the Tigers were able to dribble it out in the final seconds for a 59-52 win at TU Arena.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • The Tigers' 46.2% (6-13) three-point field goal percentage is their second-highest mark this season, behind their 62.5% (5-8) mark against Youngstown State in non-conference play.
  • The Tigers completed their first wire-to-wire victory of the season, holding the lead for 38:24. The game was tied for the other 1:36.
  • Bristol had a season-high 16 points on 71.4% (5-7) shooting.
