UNCW Pulls Away Late to Beat Towson Women’s Basketball

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team hosted UNCW in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play Sunday afternoon at TU Arena. The Seahawks (13-14, 7-7 CAA) pulled away in the third quarter to top the Tigers (9-17, 7-8 CAA), 72-63.
 
India Johnston led the team with 16 points. Anasia Staton had 13 points, adding a team-high eight rebounds.

  • Towson started the second quarter on a 9-2 run to get out to a 20-13 lead.
  • UNCW closed the quarter on a 14-9 run to cut the Tiger lead to two at the half.
  • Ali Zelaya of UNCW hit back-to-back threes to start the third quarter, opening a 10-2 run through the first 2:47 of the half. That gave the Seahawks a 37-31 lead.
  • Khady Leye hit an and-one and sunk the free throw to cut UNCW's lead to four at 46-42 with 2:45 left in the third.
  • The Seahawks hit the final two shots of the third quarter to extend their lead to eight with ten minutes to play.
  • After a made UNCW three, Towson scored eight straight, with two threes from Johnston, to cut the deficit to three with 8:36 left in regulation.
  • Back-to-back baskets re-extended UNCW's lead to seven before another Johnston three and Leye layup made it a two-point game.
