William & Mary Tops Women’s Basketball at SECU Arena

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team hosted the reigning CAA champion William & Mary Tribe on Friday evening at SECU Arena.
 
In a game where both teams shot similar percentages from the field and behind the arc, William & Mary's (12-9, 5-5 CAA) 71.4% (5-7) free throw mark proved to be the difference as Towson (12-10, 5-5 CAA) shot 46.2% (6-13) from the line. Tilda Sjökvist got a decent look to take the lead late, but the shot didn't fall, as the Tribe went on to win 52-51.

  • William & Mary scored 11 points from 17 Towson turnovers to the Tigers' four points off nine Tribe turnovers.

How it Happened
  • Towson opened the game with a 6-2 lead through two minutes of game time. Hannah Dereje led with four to start.
  • Kayla Morris hit a layup with 1:42 on the clock, extending Towson's lead to seven at 16-9.
  • William & Mary hit two shots, a three and two, to cut the deficit down to two by quarter's end.
  • The Tigers' first three makes of the second quarter were triples. Sjökvist and India Johnston's on back-to-back possessions pushed Towson ahead 25-18.
  • The Tribe finished the final seven minutes of the quarter on a 10-6 run, giving the Tigers a 31-28 halftime lead.
  • William & Mary took its first lead of the game at 35-34 with 6:08 on the clock in the third after coming out of halftime on a 7-3 run.
  • The Tribe won the third quarter 14-10, giving them a 42-41 lead headed into the fourth.
  • Towson scored five quick points to begin the quarter and reclaimed the lead at 46-42.
  • Tied at 49 all, William & Mary's Kyah Smith hit a three with just over three minutes to play in regulation.
  • Johnston's jumper with 1:11 to play pulled the Tigers within one.

The Tigers will face Northeastern on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. for senior day. Sunday's senior day ceremony will begin at approximately 12:40 p.m.
