Marchbanks, Matulevicius Lead Towson in Win over Northeastern on Senior Day

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team hosted the Northeastern Huskies at SECU Arena on Sunday at 1 p.m.
 
Towson (13-10, 6-5 CAA), led by redshirt freshman Viki Matulevicius' 12-point first half, went up nine over Northeastern (6-15, 2-9 CAA) at the break. The Tigers' highest scoring quarter in the third extended their lead as they went on to win 63-55 on senior day.
 
Key Stats
  • Towson outrebounded Northeastern 46-36. The Tigers scored 12 second chance points off 18 offensive boards.
  • The Black & Gold scored 15 points off 12 Northeastern turnovers.
  • The Tiger bench outscored the Huskies' 25-17.
 
How it Happened
  • The teams traded long runs for much of the first quarter. Towson opened the game up 6-0 before allowing nine unanswered to the Huskies over the next three and a half minutes.
  • Viki Matulevicius and Masyn Marchbanks scored over the final minutes of the quarter, putting the Tigers up 11-9 after the first ten minutes.
  • Northeastern claimed a 15-13 lead with 7:03 left in the half before the Tigers went on a 9-0 run, backed by three points each from Johnston and Matulevicius.
  • Matulevicius scored the Tigers' final seven points of the half, putting Towson up 29-20 at the break.
  • The third quarter was Towson's highest scoring period of the game. Marchbanks and Semaya Turner led the team with five and four, respectively. That quarter put the Tigers ahead 48-34 with one to play.
  • Towson extended its lead to 16 before a 7-0 Husky run cut it down to nine with 5:41 to go.
  • Up nine with less than three minutes remaining, Kayla Morris hit a triple, pushing the lead back to 12.
  • Northeastern could only cut the deficit down to seven in the final minutes as the Tigers won 63-55 on their home court.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Matulevicius posted four steals, marking a new career-high for the redshirt freshman. She scored 14 points, matching her career high against Coppin State on Nov. 16.
  • Marchbanks tallied 11 points, her first game in double figures as a Tiger. The senior is shooting 4-10 from three over her last two games, the first two starts of her Black & Gold career.
  • India Johnston totaled 11 points, marking her 17th game in double figures this season. The senior added three rebounds and assists.
 
Next Game
Towson goes back on the road to face Hampton on Friday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. The Tigers will face William & Mary in Williamsburg on Sunday at 1 p.m.
