Towson University to Unveil Brooks Robinson Field at John B. Schuerholz Park on Friday

TOWSON, Md.- Before the Towson University baseball team takes the field versus Stony Brook on Friday, April 24, Towson University will officially unveil Brooks Robinson Field at John B. Schuerholz Park.

Brooks Robinson Field at John B. Schuerholz Park was made possible by Constance and Brooks Robinson Charitable Foundation, Inc's $1 million gift, one of the largest single contributions in TU Athletics history. The gift honors Baltimore Orioles Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson and his legacy of excellence, sportsmanship and commitment to community.

Known as "Mr. Oriole," Brooks Calbert Robinson, Jr. spent his entire 23-year MLB career in Baltimore and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983 in his first year of eligibility. Generally considered to have been the greatest defensive third baseman in major league history, he won 16 consecutive Gold Gloves and was an 18-time All-Star. Robinson was the 1964 American League Most Valuable Player, 1966 All-Star Game MVP and 1970 World Series MVP – one of just two players in MLB history to win those three awards. Brooks and his wife, Connie, raised their four children: Brooks David (Towson '83), Chris, Mike and Diana in nearby Lutherville.

The pre-ceremony will begin at 2:30 p.m., 30 minutes before first pitch, featuring remarks from Towson Vice President of Athletics Steve Eigenbrot, University President Mark R. Ginsberg, head baseball coach Matt Tyner and Brooks David Robinson. Tippy Martinez, Robinson's teammate in 1976 and 1977, will represent the Orioles. Brooks David will throw the ceremonial first pitch.

Dedicated April 29, 2001, John B. Schuerholz Park marked a major renovation and expansion of TU's baseball facilities – adding permanent seating, a press box, concessions and restrooms. It was made possible by a transformational gift from National Baseball Hall of Famer John B. Schuerholz '62 and his family. Schuerholz spent his junior and senior years at Towson where he excelled at soccer and baseball.
