Men's Basketball Spiro Morekas

So Far So Good

It has been a great start for the 2014-15 Tiger men's basketball team. After defeating Coppin State, 84-76, the Tigers have started the season at 7-1 and are on a seven-game win streak. By beating Coppin State on Dec. 3, the Tigers are now 4-0 versus locals Morgan State, Goucher, UMBC and the Eagles.

The 7-1 start, is the best for the Tigers since they the 1976-77 team. That group started the season 25-1, and finished with the most wins in school history at 27. If this team starts 25-1, they will be in the Top 10 nationally and become the biggest story in all of college basketball.

But right now Head Coach Pat Skerry and his team are concentrating on one game at a time.

Dec. 3 vs. Coppin State
The Eagles came into this last game having played the toughest schedule in the country according to the Sagarin ratings. Aside from the 84-76 loss on Wednesday, Coppin State's losses are against Oregon, Illinois, Denver and Notre Dame.

It was strange this year not seeing Fang Mitchell on the Coppin sidelines. If there were a Mount Rushmore of Baltimore college coaches, Fang would be on it, no questions asked. The colorful coach had his team battling for the MEAC championship on a yearly basis, he took the Eagles to the NCAA tournament five times, and they won a first-round game against South Carolina in 1996 as a number 15 seed before losing to Texas in the second round by a point.

The Eagles gave the Tigers a fight on Dec. 3 in the first half, trailing only by five at the half, 38-33. But Towson's 19-6 run to open the second half gave the Tigers enough of a cushion to withstand the Eagles' late three-point-shooting attack. Sophomore John Davis scored a career-best 23 points and had 14 rebounds to lead the Tigers. Davis was joined in double figures by Alex Gavrilovic's 14 points and freshman Mike Morsell's 12.  Gavrilovic and senior Timajh Parker-Rivera each pulled down eight rebounds.

That's the thing with this Tiger team: it's a different guy every night. The Tigers are playing a 10-man rotation, and it not only keeps everyone on the team engaged, but it also wears down the opponent.  This past Saturday against UMBC, the Tigers trailed UMBC by three at the half, before outscoring the Retrievers by 14 in the second half. On the year, the Tigers have outscored their opponents by 54 points in the second half. Take out the 19-point deficit in the second 20 minutes against Alabama, and the Tigers are outscoring their opponents by an average of 12.2 points per game in the second half.

Some stats really stand out so far. Towson is outrebounding their opponents by 12 per game. That is 16th in the country out of the 351 Division I schools. Towson is 42nd in three-point field goal percentage defense, and 47th in offensive rebounds per game. The Tigers are also 12th in the country in free throw attempts, and four of the schools in front of Towson have played more games.

Speaking of free throws, how about Four McGlynn? The junior from York, Pennsylvania is 43-44 from the charity stripe. That's 97.7 percent, good for ninth in the country. The eight guys in front of Four have not missed yet, but they haven't had as many attempts as the Tiger guard. This is nothing new. Four set a school record last year at 91.3 percent. The all-time NCAA record is 94.6 percent, and the record for someone with at least 600 career free throws is 91.2 percent held by Duke's JJ Redick. Right now, Four's career free throw percentage is 91.2 percent. Towson knows if they can get the lead with just a couple of minutes left, get the ball in Four's hands and let the opponent foul him. Odds are pretty darn good the Tigers will walk off the court with a victory.

Now the Tigers will head to the Verizon Center for a noon matchup with the Hoyas of Georgetown on Dec. 7. Last time the Tigers played down in DC against the Hoyas, Towson almost pulled off the upset.  Hopefully this Sunday, they get it done.

You can hear the game against Georgetown on CBS Sports Radio 1300 with Jerry Bembry and I starting at 11:45 a.m.

Until next week, GO TIGERS!!!
