TOWSON, Md. ? Looking to end their season-opening three-meet homestand on a positive note, the Tigers faced a tough East Carolina squad and dropped a 203-95 non-conference decision against the Pirates at Burdick Pool on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Thiago Cavalcanit won three individual events and was a member of a winning relay team to lead the Pirates to their second straight victory after splitting the first two meets.
“The men's team continues to show improvements,” Towson Coach Pat Mead said. “If we can continue to improve from week to week, the win column will begin to look better.”
Cavalcanit finished first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:46.13 before earning a victory in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 1 minute, 44.08 seconds. After winning the 500-yard freestyle in 4:39.09, Cavalcanit helped the Pirates win the 400-yard freestyle relay by swimming the third leg for the victorious team, which posted a time of 3 minutes, 8.51 seconds.
Freshman Ailton Temotio finished first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.55 seconds before taking a victory in the 100-yard freestyle in 46.95 seconds.
Sophomore Thomas Ryan took first place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 58.17 seconds before earning first place in the 200-yard breastroke with a time of 2:10.08.
Junior James Mehaffey won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:58.00 while sophomore Andrew Stoker won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:56.62. Freshman Travis Stauder posted a time of 1.58.27 to earn first place in the 200-yard individual medley.
Senior Eric Pinno and junior Bradley Bolin led the Tigers in the loss by winning a pair of events. Pinno took first place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 52.40 seconds before winning the 100-yard butterfly with a time fo 50.63 seconds. Meanwhile, Bolin swept the diving events for the Tigers, scoring 266.32 points in the three-meter event before posting a score of 245.00 points in the one-meter event.
After opening the season with three straight home meets, the Tigers will compete in their first road meet of the season next weekend when they travel to George Mason to face the Patriots, Delaware and UNC Wilmington.
