TOWSON, Md. ? Sophomore guard Simona Petronyte's three-pointer with :39 left pulled the Towson basketball team to within one but the Tigers were unable to get the final bucket falling to William & Mary 61-60 in Colonial Athletic Association action on Sunday. The Tigers (8-3, 0-1 CAA) saw their six-game win streak at home snapped.
Towson found itself down 55-45 with 8:01 remaining in the second half following a lay-up by the Tribe's Lauren Aadland. Junior forward Kandace Davis hit a lay-up with 7:37 to go that would start a 7-0 Tigers' run. Junior forward Haliena Snowden's lay-up at 5:40 capped the run and made it a 55-52 game. Janine Aldridge hit her sixth three-pointer of the game with 5:32 to go to put William & Mary back up by six. Davis' lay-up at 5:06 started a 6-1 run for the Tigers that covered the next three minutes. Davis' free throw at 2:13 capped the run and made it a 59-57 contest.
Dani Kell hit a bucket in the paint with 1:44 to put the Tribe up four and set the stage for Petronyte's trey. Trailing 61-60, Towson had a chance to tie or win the game in the final 20 seconds put was unable to get a shot to fall.
The first half had started as a tightly contested contest as both teams came out firing from three-point range. The first four baskets for the two teams combined where from behind the arch. A trey by Petronyte at 14:57 gave Towson an 11-10 advantage, its last lead of the contest. The Tribe responded by hitting back-to-back threes to take a 16-11 lead with 13:49 to go in the half. A 6-2 run by the Tigers made it an 18-17 game with 11:12 to play in the half. Junior guard Shanae Baker-Brice had four of Towson's six during that stretch. The Tribe responded by scoring six unanswered points to lead 24-17 with 9:03 to play. The two teams traded baskets over the next five minutes with a lay-up by Baker-Brice at 4:13 made it a 29-26 game. William & Mary closed the first half on a 12-5 run to take a 41-31 lead into the locker room. Aldridge had five while Aadland contributed four of the Tribe's 12.
Towson opened the second half on a 10-3 run to make it a 44-41 game with 15:39 to play. Baker-Brice had five of the Tigers' 10 while Petronyte hit her fourth of five three-pointers in the game. William & Mary extended its advantage to 49-43 with 11:00 to play on Kell's three-pointer. A lay-up by junior forward Katrina Wheeler at 10:32 made it a 49-45 game. William & Mary scored the next six points to go up 55-45, setting the stage for the Tigers' late run.
William & Mary won the battle on the boards, finishing the game with a 40-36 advantage. The Tribe also got 36 points from its bench. Towson got 15 points on 19 William & Mary turnovers.
The Tigers had four players score in double figures as Petronyte and Baker-Brice tied for the team-high with 15 points apiece. Petronyte had a career-high five three-pointers made while Baker-Brice had six rebounds. Davis finished with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds while Wheeler contributed 10 points and seven boards.
Aldridge finished with a season-high 22 points after connecting on six three-pointers. She would also add five rebounds, six assists and no turnovers in 34 minutes of action. Tiffany Benson had nine points and a team-high eight rebounds while Aadland contributed eight points and six boards.
The Tigers return to action on Thursday, January 8 when they travel to James Madison. Tip-time in Harrisonburg is set for 7 p.m.
