Tigers Rally to Edge Delaware, 2-1

TOWSON, Md. – Senior defender Kaitlyn Zamroz scored a goal and added an assist as the Tigers (6-9-1, 2-5-0) rallied from a 1-0 deficit to earn a 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the University of Delaware (5-4-4, 2-2-3) at the Towson Center Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon.

The Tigers, who snapped a five-game losing streak, scored both goals in the second half to earn the victory. Meanwhile, the loss snapped the Blue Hens' five-game unbeaten streak.

“We have battled through tough odds all season and today was no exception,” Towson Coach Greg Paynter said. “From the conditions of the field to going down a goal early in the first half to getting an unfortunate red card and going down a player, it was tough. The girls battled and I think we played more inspired and determined after all of the adversity.”

The Blue Hens took a quick 1-0 lead in the eighth minute when freshman forward Ali Miller took a feed from senior midfielder Kasie Shover and scored her second goal of the season.

The Tigers tied the game at 1-1 less than five minutes into the second half when senior forward Phyllicia Rosselli headed home a corner kick by Zamroz for her fourth goal of the season.

In the 75th minute, the Tigers were forced to play with just 10 players on the field when sophomore goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak was issued a red card on a tackle and ejected from the game. The Tigers were forced to put freshman midfielder Cheyenne Skidmore in as the goalkeeper and she was forced to make a save immediately on the ensuing free kick.

The game remained tied until the 85th minute when senior midfielder Brittany Hadaway was fouled inside the penalty area, giving the Tigers a penalty kick attempt. Zamroz took the attempt and scored to the upper left corner for her first goal of the season, giving Towson a 2-1 advantage.

From there, Skidmore and the Tiger defense held the Blue Hens off to earn the victory.

Skidmore made two saves in the final 16 minutes to earn the first goalkeeping victory of her career after Papciak made three saves.

“Cheyenne is an outstanding athlete and she had a major impact in the game not only offensively but in the goal as well,” said Paynter. “When you have a good athlete, you want to put them in situations where they can respond and I think she did that today when she was forced to play as our goalkeeper.”

Senior goalkeeper Annie Bevan made eight saves for the Blue Hens, who were outshot by a 19-14 margin.

The Tigers also had a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

The Tigers will play their final home game of the season on Sunday afternoon when they host Drexel University on Senior Day. Prior to the 12 p.m. kickoff, the Tigers' seven seniors will be honored in pre-game ceremonies.

The Blue Hens will travel to George Mason on Sunday afternoon for a 2 p.m. game against the Patriots.
