ANNAPOLIS, Md. - A strong second half helped lift the Tigers (6-4) to their fourth straight win, a 56-43 victory over Navy at Alumni Hall on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers had three players score in double figures en route to their first road win of the season.
"I was proud of the performance today and the fact that we got our first road win," said Coach Joe Mathews. "I thought that there was the possibility for letdown coming off Thursday's big win but I thought the kids responded very well especially in the second half to fight and gain the victory."
Navy jumped out to a 17-10 lead in the opening 12 minutes before the Tigers used a 12-4 run to take a 22-21 lead with 2:14 remaining in the first half. Senior forward Haliena Snowden scored six of her season-high 14 points in the stanza, including four during the late run.
After the teams exchanged baskets to open the second half, the Tigers used an 8-0 run to take a 41-33 lead with 11:51 remaining in the game. The Tigers continued to add to their lead as Simona Petronyte's lay-up at 5:29 made it a 49-37 game. The two teams traded baskets over the final five minutes before a jumper by Jaleesa Dryver with 1:04 remaining gave Towson its largest lead of the game at 54-40 and put the game out of reach.
While Snowden led the Tigers with 14 points, she also contributed seven rebounds and three steals. Petronyte scored 11 points along with five assists and three rebounds. Shanae Baker-Brice was the third Tiger in double figures as she scored 10 points along with six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Katrina Wheeler added seven rebounds as the Tigers held a slim 41-40 advantage on the boards.
Cassie Consedine led Navy with 15 points and seven rebounds while Kristin Bowen tallied 13 points and six rebounds.
The Midshipmen were held to just 28.1 per cent shooting from the field, including a 5-for-26 effort from three-point range.
Towson returns to action on Saturday, December 19 when the Tigers travel to UMES at 3 p.m.
