NORFOLK, Va. ? A 19-7 run midway through the second half lifted Old Dominion to a 65-57 win over the Tigers on Thursday night in Norfolk. The Tigers (16-10, 8-8 CAA) saw their two-game win streak snapped despite 18 points from Shanae Baker-Brice.
“I thought tonight was a very physical game,” said Coach Joe Mathews. “I'm proud of our girls who continued to work hard even when Old Dominion took the eight-point lead.”
Towson led by four coming out of the locker room and quickly extended that lead to six on a pair of made free throws by Katrina Wheeler at 19:33. The two teams traded baskets over the next four minutes with a jumper by Baker-Brice at 14:51 put the visitors up 36-32. Shadasia Green hit a lay-up at 14:39 that would set the Lady Monarchs on their 19-7 run and gave the home team a lead it would not relinquish. Jazzmin Walters hit a jumper at 8:00 to put the home team up 51-43 and capped the Old Dominion run. Towson responded with a 9-2 run of its own to cut the score to 53-52 with 6:04 remaining. Old Dominion responded with a couple buckets of its own including a three-pointer by Jessica Canady to lead 58-52. Old Dominion scored seven of the final 12 points in the game to claim the 65-57 victory.
Towson opened the game on a 17-8 run behind eight points from Baker-Brice and four from Wheeler in the first seven minutes of the contest. Old Dominion would score seven of the next nine to make it a 19-15 game with 7:58 to play in the half. A jumper by Haliena Snowden at 6:13 put the visitors up 23-17. Old Dominion scored four of the final six to send the teams to the locker room with Towson holding a 25-21 lead.
Baker-Brice would add seven rebounds, five assists and five steals to go along with her 18 points. Wheeler finished with 12 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots. Snowden was the third Tiger in double figures as she finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Jasmine Parker led Old Dominion with 15 points while Green added 12. Canady finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Tigers return to action on Sunday, March 1 at William & Mary for a 2 p.m. game.
