Early Runs Lift Maryland over Towson

COLLEGE PARK, Md. ? Maryland scored five runs in the first two innings to claim a 7-3 victory over the Tigers on Wednesday evening. The Tigers (8-5) were led by Emily Gould, who had three hits, a run scored and an RBI.

Towson jumped out to an early lead in the game as Kim Lempa reached on an error leading off the frame. Lempa would score on Sammi DiPompo's single to left field.

Maryland reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the first with three runs. Breanna Shaw had an RBI double in the inning to score Niki Lau. Shaw scored in the inning on a groundout from Lydia Fowler.

The Terrapins added to their lead in the second with a pair of runs. Lau drove in one of Maryland's runs in the frame.

The Tigers got one back in the third inning as Gould scored on Stef Streets' RBI single.

Maryland reached the Tiger pitching staff for two more runs in the fifth. Jennifer Anderson had an RBI double in the inning for the big blow.

In the seventh, Gould roped a double to score Lempa and make it a 7-3 final.

Kerry Hickey earned the win for Maryland in the circle. Hickey went five innings, surrendering two runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Shannon Johnston took the loss for the Tigers after giving up five runs in one plus innings of action.

Gould was the only Tigers with multiple hits in the game, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Lempa finished with one hit and two runs scored. DiPompo and Streets had the other RBIs for the Tigers.

Lau and Nadine Blackie contributed two hits apiece for the Terrapins.

The Tigers return to action on Friday, March 13 when they face Kent State at the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational.
