BOCA RATON, Fla. ? Lindsey Kent's RBI groundout in the top of the sixth broke a 1-1 tie and helped lift the Tigers to a 2-1 victory Stony Brook in the opening game of the Miken Classic hosted by Florida Atlantic on Friday. The Tigers (6-2) got a complete game one-hit victory from Shannon Johnston in the circle. Stony Brook, who has an NCAA Tournament participant last year, falls to 4-2 on the year.
Trailing 1-0 as they entered the top of the sixth inning, the Tigers got back-to-back singles from Mindy Bean and Stef Streets. Erika Stasch followed with a bunt base hit to load the bases with no one out. Pinch-hitter Meaghan Clark hit into a fielder's choice for the first out and Bean crossed the plate to tie the game. Kent would follow with a pinch-hit groundout allowing Streets to score the go ahead run.
Johnston shut down Stony Brook in the final two innings to seal the victory.
Stony Brook had jumped out to an early lead in the contest with a run in the bottom of the second. Kendall Blumenthal reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second after Molly Kestranek was hit by a pitch. Blumenthal advanced to third on a fielder's choice and scored an unearned run on a Tiger error.
Streets was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored while Bean went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Clark and Kent picked up the RBIs in the contest for the Tigers.
Marissa Fluery had the only hit of the day allowed by Johnston.
Johnston picked up her fourth win of the year after allowing one unearned run and one hit. She struck out four and walked two while recording her third complete game in four starts. Alyssa Struzenberg, the America East Pitcher of the Year last season, took the loss for Stony Brook after surrendering two runs on four hits in five innings.
The Tigers return to action on Friday at 1 p.m. when they face Harvard in their second game of the Miken Classic. Towson will then face Columbia at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
