McDonald, Hixon Lead Tigers To Decisive Win Over Yale

TOWSON, Md. ? Junior Alise McDonald won the all-around competition for the fifth time this season as she led the Tigers (13-5) to a 192.500 team score and a decisive victory over short-handed Yale University in the Towson Center on Saturday evening. Competing with only five entries on bars, beam and floor, Yale had a 183.500 team score.

McDonald, who earned a 38.60 all-around score, tied for second place on vault with a 9.80 score. She also finished fourth on bars (9.40) and was seventh on beam (9.475). She closed out her effort by tying for first place on floor exercise (9.825).

Freshman Avis Hixon also had an outstanding meet for the Tigers, winning vault and floor. She matched her career high with a 9.85 score on vault and her career high 9.825 on floor enabled her to tie for first place with McDonald and senior Alina Liao of Yale.

With junior captain Jackie Schweitzer limited to competing on bars due to an injury, the Tigers opened the meet on vault and earned a 48.775 team score. While Hixon finished first, McDonald tied for second with freshman Kacy Catanzaro, who also had a career high 9.80 score. Sophomore Megan Wooden of Towson was fourth with a 9.675 score while freshman Kady Sullivan took fifth place (9.65).

Schweitzer, who was injured in the Tigers' loss at William & Mary on Wednesday night, managed to compete on bars and won the event with an impressive 9.725 score. Sophomore Emily Hill of Towson took third place (9.525) while McDonald took fourth.

On the balance beam, Liao of Yale took first place with a 9.825 score. Freshman Lindsay Poplaski of Towson tied with Brigitte Kivisto of Yale for second place on beam with 9.725 scores. Catanzaro took fourth place on beam (9.65).

The Tigers clinched the meet on floor exercise as they earned a 48.875 team score. While Hixon and McDonald were part of a three-way tie for first place with Liao, Tiger freshman Alyssa Dittman finished fourth (9.775). Wooden tied for fifth place (9.75) on floor.

McDonald's 38.60 all-around score edged out Liao (38.475), who took second place. Wooden finished third in the all-around competition with a 37.975 score while Allison Mak of Yale was fourth (36.70).

“This was a good meet for us. I liked the way we were able to bounce back from the other night,” said Coach Dick Filbert. “Not having Jackie on vault and beam could have really hurt us but we had some gymnasts step up and do well.”
