RALEIGH, N.C. - One of three Tigers gymnasts competing as an individual, sophomore Megan Wooden finished 17th in the all-around competition with a 37.85 score at the NCAA Southeast regional meet at Reynolds Coliseum on the campus of North Carolina State University on Saturday evening. Junior Alise McDonald, the other Tiger competing as an individual, took 19th place in the all-around competition with a 37.725 score.
The number one-ranked team in the nation, Georgia, took the team title while Penn State finished second.
While Wooden and McDonald were competing as all-arounds, junior Jackie Schweitzer competed as an individual on bars and balance beam. The ECAC champion on bars, Schweitzer earned a 9.625 score and finished 26th in the meet. On balance beam, she earned a 9.575 score to take 31st place.
"It's very difficult to come into the regional meet and compete as an individual," said Coach Dick Filbert. "As a gymnast, it's very unfamiliar territory since you don't have any of your teammates around to support you. This was a good experience for Alise, Jackie and Megan. I'm sure it will help them next season."
Competing in her first regional meet, Wooden earned a 9.30 on vault, well below her seasonal average. However, she came back strong and earned a 9.525 on bars to tie for 30th place. Wooden's 9.40 on balance beam placed her 37th and she earned a 9.625 on floor exercise to place 38th.
McDonald had one of her lowest scores of the season on vault with a 9.625, earning her 38th place. On bars, McDonald had a 9.35 score to finish 33rd in the meet. On beam, she did well and came up with a 9.60 to tie for 27th place. However, McDonald struggled on the floor exercise and had a seasonal low 9.15 score to finish 42nd in the meet.
