Erica Marshall Leads Tigers to 4-1 Win Over Bucknell

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Senior forward Erica Marshall scored two goals and added two assists as the Tigers (1-1-0) exploded for a season-high four goals en route to a 4-1 victory over Bucknell University (0-1-0) in the opening match of the JMU/Comfort Inn Harrisonburg Invitational at the JMU Soccer Complex on Friday evening.

Marshall, who recorded the fourth multi-goal match of her college career, moved into sixth place on the Tigers' career scoring list with her career-high six-point performance. She is the sixth player in school history to reach 40 career points and now has 16 goals and 8 assists in her career.

“We did a good job tonight and we finished some opportunities, which was a good thing after the match on Monday,” Towson Coach Greg Paynter said. “Bucknell was real fired up and took it to us early and we weathered the storm.”

Paynter added, “Erica was aggressive and took some good opportunities with some of her shots and did a great job of finding other players on the field.”

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute when senior forward Phyllicia Rosselli scored her first goal of the season by converting passes from Marshall and freshman Cheyenne Skidmore.

Less than seven minutes into the second half, Marshall upped the Tiger advantage to 2-0 when she scored an unassisted goal from 16 yards out. Rosselli tallied her second goal of the game in the 58th minute when she scored off a pass from Marshall, giving Towson a 3-0 edge.

With 8:31 left in the match, Marshall scored her second goal of the match, an unassisted marker past freshman goalkeeper Sandita McDermott to give Towson a 4-0 lead.

The Bison closed the deficit to 4-1 in the 87th minute when sophomore forward Megan DeGennaro scored her first goal of the season on a shot which deflected off junior goalkeeper Kristen Sample.

Sample, who made her first start of the season, made a career-high seven saves, including four in the second half.

While Marshall had two goals with two assists, Rosselli posted the second multi-goal match of her career with a two-goal effort against the Bison.

The Tigers, who are in the middle of a four-match road trip, will face Xavier on Sunday morning in the second round of the JMU/Comfort Inn Harrisonburg Invitational at 11 a.m. Meanwhile, Bucknell will face host James Madison on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
