Tigers Fall in Overtime to James Madison 72-68

TOWSON, Md. - Shanae Baker-Brice broke Towson's career scoring mark while connecting on a career-high 32 points but it was not enough as the Tigers (8-7, 2-2 CAA) fell to James Madison, 72-68 in overtime. Towson dropped its second straight as Haliena Snowden posted a "double-double" to go along with Baker-Brice's big performance.

Baker-Brice, who now has 1,557 career points in 106 career games broke Danielle Barry's record of 1,555 career points.

"I was disappointed tonight in our inability to finish," said Coach Joe Mathews. "I thought we had a chance and we just couldn't close them out. I am proud of Shanae for her accomplishment tonight."

The two teams battled each other early in the first half. A three-pointer by Dawn Evans at 13:20 cut the Tiger lead to 15-14. It was also the last time the Tigers would hold a lead in the contest until late in the second half. The Dukes would outscore Towson 10-5 over the next five and a half minutes to take a 28-20 lead. The Tigers responded by scoring 10 of the final 14 points in the half. The visitors took a 34-32 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Baker-Brice would tie the score at 34-34 on a lay-up just as the teams resumed play in the second half. James Madison went on a 14-7 run to take a 48-41 lead with 14 minutes to play in the half. Towson responded with an 11-2 run to turn a seven point deficit into a two point lead with 6:34 to play. Baker-Brice's lay-up at 6:34 also gave the Tigers their first lead since early in the first half. The Tigers would stretch their lead to eight with 2:30 to play in the half. Baker-Brice's jumper made it a 59-51 game. The Dukes responded by going on a 6-1 run to pull within three with 1:06 to play. Evans then hit a three-pointer with 53 seconds remaining to tie the score at 60-60. Evans tried a three-pointer at the buzzer and was unable to convert as the two teams headed to overtime.

Simona Petronyte hit a pair of free throws with 4:42 remaining in overtime to give Towson the 62-60 advantage. The Dukes then went on a 7-0 run to take a 67-62 advantage with 2:37 to play. The teams traded foul shots to make it a 68-64 game with 1:50 to play. Baker-Brice hit a pair of free throws at 1:17 to tie the school's scoring record and make it a two point game. Kanita Shepherd hit one of two free throws to give the Dukes a 69-66 edge with :56 to go. Baker-Brice pulled the Tigers to within one at 69-68 with 20 seconds to play. That basket was also the one that broke Barry's record. Evans sunk both free throws with 17 seconds to play to make it a 71-68 game. The Tigers tried a three-pointer with five seconds left that would have tied the game but it was blocked and the Dukes made one of two from the line to seal the victory.

Baker-Brice scored 30+ points for the first time in her career as she finished with 32. She would also add seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Snowden contributed 15 points and 11 rebounds for her third "double-double" of the season. Katrina Wheeler returned to the Tiger line-up after missing the last two games and pulled down a season-high 15 rebounds and eight points.

Evans finished with 30 points, nine rebounds and four assists to lead the Dukes. Sarah Williams finished with 18 points, nine rebounds, five steals and three blocks.

Towson returns to action on Sunday, January 17 when the team travels to Georgia State for a 2 p.m. contest.
