NEWARK, Del. - Delaware placed five players in double figures en route to a 72-49 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Tigers on Thursday evening at the Bob Carpenter Center. Towson (9-10, 3-5 CAA) got a team-high 12 points from Kandace Davis in the loss.
"Unfortunately, we couldn't take advantage of our opportunities tonight," said Coach Joe Mathews. "You have to take care of the basketball and make your shots and we just never seemed to find that rhythm tonight."
The two teams battled each other early as there were six lead changes and two ties in the first 12 minutes of the contest. With the score tied at 11-11, Delaware went on a 12-4 run to take a 23-15 lead with 7:47 to play in the half. The Blue Hens got eight points from Elena Delle Donne during that stretch. The two teams traded buckets over the next several minutes with an Eva Riddick lay-up at 2:37 giving the home team a 35-22 advantage. It was Delaware's largest lead of the half. The Tigers scored five of the final seven points in the half to make it a 37-27 game at the intermission.
Delaware opened the second half on a 21-11 run to take a 58-38 lead with 9:29 to play. The Blue Hens scored 14 of the final 25 points in the game to claim the 72-49 victory.
In addition to her 12 points, Davis contributed four rebounds, two assists and two steals for the Tigers. Haliena Snowden scored 10 points despite being hampered by foul trouble. Shanae Baker-Brice was the third Tiger in double figures as she scored 11 points with two steals.
Delle Donne led Delaware with 18 points, all of which came in the first half as she missed the second half due to injury. Lauren Carra came off the bench to score 14 points and add four assists. Three other Blue Hens tallied 10 points in the contest as the Blue Hens presented Tina Martin with the 250th victory of her coaching career.
Towson returns to action on Sunday, January 31 at James Madison for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
