TOWSON, Md. – Sophomore forward Sarah Bennett scored the game-winning goal in the 59th minute as Georgia State University (11-3-2, 5-1-1) overcame an early deficit to earn a 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Tigers (6-7-3, 2-4-1) at the Towson Center Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon.
The win extended the Panthers' unbeaten streak to five straight games. They are 4-0-1 during the streak and have outscored their opponents by a 10-4 margin.
The Tigers took a quick 1-0 lead in the 16th minute when senior defender Samantha Young took a pass from sophomore forward Cheyenne Skidmore and scored on a shot to the far post past junior goalkeeper Kellianne Collins.
But, the Panthers answered in the 44th minute when sophomore midfielder Carly Lafferty tallied her first goal of the season off an assist from freshman Briana Pitre.
With 31:52 remaining in regulation, the Panthers took a 2-1 advantage when Bennett scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season inside the penalty area off an assist from freshman forward Jewel Evans.
Collins, who entered the game as the CAA leader in save percentage, made two saves as the Panthers outshot Towson by a 12-11 margin.
Junior goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak, who entered the game ranked second in the CAA in save percentage, made four saves for the Tigers, who have lost two of their last three games.
The Tigers will host UNC Wilmington on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Towson Center Soccer Complex. Meanwhile, the Panthers will continue their four-game road trip at George Mason on Sunday afternoon.
