BUFFALO, N.Y. - Canisius battled back from an eight point second half deficit to defeat the Tigers, 58-52 on Saturday afternoon. Sheree Ledbetter led the Tigers (2-3) with a career-high 18 points in the contest.
The two teams battled early in the game before a Jaleesa Dryver jumper at 14:43 gave the Tigers an 8-4 advantage. Allison Braun hit a jumper at 14:21 to jump start a 7-0 run by the home team and give the Golden Griffins an 11-8 advantage. Jessica Haywood hit a lay-up at 12:03 to make it an 11-10 game. That was the last bucket either team would hit until Ashley Durham hit a free throw at 5:35. Canisius would build a 20-13 lead with 3:21 to play in the half. Tanisha McTiller converted a three-point play at 3:02 for the Tigers to jump start a run by the visitors. The Tigers closed the first half on an 11-4 run to tie the game at 24-24. Ledbetter and Deree Fooks had four points apiece during that stretch.
The Golden Griffins scored three of the first five baskets in the second half and held a 30-26 advantage with 17:46 to play in the game. Charmonique Watt drained a three-pointer at 17:04 to start a run by Towson. The Tigers used a 15-3 run to take a 41-33 lead with 11:38 to play in the game. Ledbetter had four points during that spurt by the Tigers while Dovile Miliauskaite and Krystin Fields converted three-point plays. Canisius used a 15-4 run of its own to turn an eight-point deficit into a 48-45 advantage with 4:32 to play. Durham had six points during the stretch for the Golden Griffins. The two teams would trade foul shot opportunities down the stretch with Canisius holding on for the 58-52 victory.
Ledbetter added five rebounds and four assists in addition to her points in the game. Fooks led Towson on the boards with seven rebounds. She would add seven points, three assists and five steals in the game. Watt contributed six steals while Krystal Parnell had six points, two rebounds and five assists.
Durham led Canisius with a career-high 22 points in the game. She added six rebounds and six assists. Jamie Ruttle came off the bench to score a career-high 11 points with eight rebounds.
The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, December 1 when they visit Mt. St. Mary's for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
