GREENVILLE, N.C. - Erika Stasch scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the seventh to help lead the Tigers to a 2-1 win over Delaware on the final day of the Pirate Classic at East Carolina. Stasch scored both runs as the Tigers (3-3) got an early season win over their CAA rival, Delaware (2-6).
"I thought we did a nice job today in several different aspects of the game," said Coach Lisa Costello. "Our pitchers did a nice job to keep us in the game and we started to hit a little bit better today."
Delaware got on the scoreboard first as Michelle Grap led off the second inning with a home run to center field.
The Tigers got the equalizer in the top of the third inning. Stasch led off with single and was sacrificed to second. After the Blue Hens got the second out of the inning, Sammi DiPompo had an infield single. The Blue Hens committed a throwing error on the play allowing Stasch to cross the plate.
Neither team would manage to dent the scoreboard until the Tigers came to bat in the top of the seventh. With one out, Stasch drew a walk. A groundout allowed her to move to second and with two outs she advanced to third on a passed ball. With DiPompo at the plate, Amanda Stacevicz threw a wild pitch allowing Stasch to score the go ahead run.
Dominique Ortega earned the win in relief for the Tigers. She allowed just two hits and struck out two in three innings. Britney Croner had started the game for Towson and allowed one run on five hits in four innings. Bertie Lake took the loss for the Blue Hens after giving up two unearned runs in 6.2 innings of work.
Mindy Bean had two hits for the Tigers while Stasch was 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Stacevicz was the only Blue Hen with multiple hits as she had two.
Towson is scheduled to face Morgan State on Tuesday, March 2. However, that game may be postponed so check back with towsontigers.com for more information. The Tigers will then return to play on March 6 as the Maryland Invite gets underway.
