Tiger Alums, Coaches Lead Bayhawks to MLL Title

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Led by former Tiger midfielder Brian Vetter, the Chesapeake Bayhawks won the Major League Lacrosse championship after a 13-9 victory over the Long Island Lizards at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Vetter, who scored a goal in the Bayhawks' 13-9 semi-final victory over the Boston Cannons, had his best season as a professional player in helping Chesapeake to the third MLL title in franchise history. He scored 19 goals, including a two-point goal, with three assists in ten games.

A four-year letter winner for the Tigers from 2005 to 2008, the Annapolis, Md. native scored 55 career goals with 20 assists for the Tigers. As a junior, he scored 15 goals with 10 assists and also had 18 goals in the 2006 season for Coach Tony Seaman.

Vetter is one of four members of the Bayhawks organization with a Towson connection. Former Tiger attackman Spencer Ford, '99 served as the team's general manager during the 2010 season. Ford is tied for third in Towson history with 184 career points.

Prior to becoming the Bayhawks' general manager, Ford was a five-year MLL veteran who played for four different teams, including the Bayhawks. He scored 37 goals with 102 assists in his career, including an MLL-record 47 assists in 2007 as a member of the Los Angeles Riptide.

In addition, Towson Associate Head Coach Shawn Nadelen is a defenseman for the Bayhawks who has played for the organization in all ten seasons. Despite suffering a knee injury in January, Nadelen recovered in enough time to appear in two regular season games and both of the Bayhawks' postseason games. He had two ground balls in the two play-off games.

Nadelen also helped Team USA win the gold medal at the World Championships in July.   

The Bayhawks' all-time leader in games played, Nadelen has appeared in 94 career regular season games and has recorded 203 ground balls. He tallied a career-high 31 ground balls in 2003 when the Bayhawks reached the MLL Championship Game.

Meanwhile, volunteer assistant coach P.T. Ricci played as a defensive midfielder for the Bayhawks this season, recording 42 ground balls in nine regular season games in addition to scoring a goal with an assist. He also saw action in the Bayhawks' semi-final victory on Saturday afternoon.

As a rookie, Ricci recorded 31ground balls in nine games for the Bayhawks while also scoring a goal.

In addition to the four Bayhawks who have Towson connections, a pair of former Tiger defensive midfielders also competed in MLL Championship Weekend. Danny Cocchi, '03 played in all 12 regular season games and both postseason contests for the Long Island Lizards, who were also making their fifth title game appearance. He has 226 career ground balls in 82 regular season games, including a career-high 47 ground balls in the 2005 and 2008 seasons.

Casey Cittadino, '06 helped the Denver Outlaws reach the MLL play-offs for the fifth consecutive season. A defensive midfielder, he scored two goals with an assist during the regular season and also contributed six ground balls for the Outlaws, who lost to Long Island by a 16-12 margin in the semi-finals. He has tallied 55 ground balls in 53 career games along with three goals and four assists.
