ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Junior goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak made five saves en route to her third shutout of the season as the Tigers (2-2-2) battled Manhattan College (1-2-1) to a scoreless double overtime draw in the opening match of the Navy Invitational at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility on Friday afternoon.
It was the Tigers' second double overtime scoreless draw of the season. Towson and Saint Louis played to a 0-0 draw in the opening match of the Duquesne Classic on August 27.
"I didn't think we came out with a lot of energy in the first half today," Towson Coach Greg Paynter said. "But, I think we played with more purpose and energy in the second half and overtime. We were able to control the game more in the second half and overtime, but were unable to break down the Jaspers' defense.
"We have to be more aggressive around the penalty area," Coach Paynter added. "It's something we need to continue to work on."
Papciak, who posted the fifth shutout of her college career on Friday afternoon, made three of her saves in the first half as the Jaspers put three of their five shots on goal.
However, the Tigers outshot Manhattan by 13-2 in the second half. But, sophomore goalkeeper Kara Davis made four of her five saves in the period to keep the score tied.
The Tigers outshot the Jaspers in the first overtime period by a 2-1 margin, but the Jaspers posted the only shot of the second overtime period, which was stopped by Papciak.
The Tigers took a season-high 20 shots against the Jaspers while Manhattan was limited to just nine attempts.
The Tigers will return to the Navy Invitational on Sunday afternoon when they play Charleston Southern at 12 noon. Meanwhile, the Jaspers will play Navy on Sunday afternoon in the second game at 3 p.m.
