JUST THE FACTS: Melissa Gomes

TOWSON, Md. - Throughout the season, TowsonTigers.com will take a look at the members of the 2010 Tiger women's soccer team with a feature called "Just the Facts."

In the first edition, TowsonTigers.com's Kate Harman sat down with senior co-captain Melissa Gomes. A native of Kingsville, Md., Gomes is a four-year starter on defense who has played in 57 career games, including all four games this season. She scored her lone career goal in the Tigers' 1-0 overtime victory over Rider during the 2008 season at the Towson Center Soccer Complex.


1. Why did you major in Sports Management?
MG: I chose to major in Sport Management because I want to stay involved in sport and working in Sport Marketing.

2. How old were you when you started playing soccer?
MG: I started playing soccer when I was 4.

3. What is the best moment in your college career so far?
MG: It was two years ago when we beat ODU 2-1 with a close second being our most recent win against Penn.

4. Why did you pick Towson?
MG: I picked Towson so I could stay semi close to home and I really liked the team.

5. What has been your favorite class at Towson?
MG: My favorite class so far was Sports Management and Sports Marketing with Dr. Han!!

6. What one word best describes Coach Greg Paynter?
MG: Committed.

7. What will you miss most when you graduate?
MG: I will miss the team the most, although I will still stay in contact with a lot of them.  I will miss seeing them everyday.

8. Before a game, I have to…
MG: Listen to my iPod or some sort of music.

9. I wear my jersey number because…
MG: I actually didn't choose my jersey number because I usually don't like double digits but after freshman year, it worked well for me so I decided to keep it and it has done very well for me.

10. On road trips I must bring…
MG: My pillow, a blanket and my iPod.

11. The worst part of pre-season is…
MG: Two-a-days, and the fact that it is so hot out.

12. My biggest goal this year is…
MG: To figure out what I want to do when I graduate.

13. You're playing Balderdash: what does T.O.W.S.O.N. stand for?
MG: T-hb (Towson Hot Bagel), O-riginality, W-elcoming, S-moothie king, O-ld bay, N-ewell

14. What three things would you bring with you on a deserted island?
MG: My pillow (don't go anywhere without it), my computer, and my iPod.

15. What reality TV show would you most like to be on and why?
MG: "Whip-out."

16. What is the movie you quote most often?
MG: "Old School."

17. What is your biggest pet peeve?
MG: Loud or bad chewing.

18. Who is the craziest member of your team?
MG: Kim Speese. (haha)

19. What's one thing you recommend every student at Towson do before they graduate?
MG: Get an egg and cheese sandwich on a croissant (if available) from the Towson Center.

20. HBO or Showtime?
MG: I don't really watch either but i guess HBO.

21. Taylor Swift or Miley Cryus?
MG: Taylor Swift.

22. "True Blood" or "Twilight?"
MG: Well, I read all of the "Twilight" books and have never seen "True Blood."

23. What is one item of clothing you wouldn't be caught dead wearing?
MG: A bow in my hair.

24. You're stuck on an elevator. Who would you most like to be on there with?
MG:  My wonderful roommate Kaysi Ward.

25. If I could invite any three people to dinner, they would be…
MG: Jennifer Aniston, Bradley Cooper, Ellen Degeneres.

26. What is the most played song on your iPod?
MG: I just got a new iPod, but right now, it is "Cinderella Man" by Eminem.

27. When I graduate, I will…
MG: Have to still figure that out, maybe go back to school, or maybe get a job.

28. What will you be doing in 10 years?
MG: Hopefully working a steady job and starting a family.
