CAA-Leading Hofstra Trims Tigers

TOWSON, Md. - Guards Charles Jenkins and Mike Moore combined to score 40 points as they led Colonial Athletic Association-leading Hofstra University (11-5, 5-0) to a 74-60 CAA victory over the Tigers (4-11, 0-5) at the Towson Center on Wednesday night.

The Pride, who posted their fourth straight win, had four players score in double figures. The win was Hofstra's tenth straight conference victory, a mark that dates back to last season.

Jenkins, who entered the game as the fourth-leading scorer in NCAA Division I with a 23.8 average, shot 7-for-14 from the field in a 19-point effort. Moore led Hofstra with 21 points as he made 7 of 13 shots from the floor. He was also six-for-six at the free throw line and added eight rebounds.

The CAA-leading Pride never trailed in the game and rolled to a 39-30 halftime lead. Hofstra owned a 24-13 rebounding edge in the first half and scored 11 second chance points.

Hofstra jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the start of the game and led by as much as 29-15 prior to intermission. Jenkins and Moore led Hofstra with 12 points each.

"We came out and were just standing around," said Towson Coach Pat Kennedy. "We had no offensive movement. We worked for two days to get ready for that zone but our guys just froze."

Early in the second half, the Tigers cut their deficit to 43-39 with 17:11 remaining. However, Hofstra responded with a 15-3 run that gave the Pride a 58-42 advantage with 11:50 left. Moore scored five points in the decisive spurt.

Hofstra used 57.7 per cent shooting in the second half as the Pride coasted to their sixth straight win over Towson.

Rebounding was a decisive factor in the contest. Hofstra owned a 39-30 rebounding advantage over Towson and scored 21 second chance points.

While Jenkins and Moore combined for 40 points, 6-10 senior Greg Washington added 16 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore David Imes contributed 11 points.

The seventh-leading scorer in the CAA, sophomore Isaiah Philmore led the Tigers with 21 points. He shot 9-for-17 from the floor and grabbed four rebounds. Junior RaShawn Polk added 15 points and four steals for the Tigers, who lost their fourth game in a row.

Junior Braxton Dupree, who spent most of the game in foul trouble, played only 19 minutes. He scored a seasonal low four points with five rebounds.

"It took us awhile to get going and once we did I thought we were in pretty good shape," added Kennedy. "With Braxton getting into the foul trouble he got into, we're not going to be able to win or beat people with him on the bench. But our kids gave it a gallant effort again and cut it down to four."

The Tigers return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Delaware in a CAA game at 12 noon.
