IN THE SERIES: This is the 18th meeting between Towson and VCU. The Rams, who are currently tied for first place with Hofstra, lead the series 16-1. The Rams are averaging 78.8 ppg against the Tigers who are scoring at a 60.3 rate in the series. VCU pounded the Tigers 112-53 in the only meeting last year in Richmond. The Rams set a program record and tied a CAA mark by hitting 20 three-pointers in handing Towson its worst loss in 31 years at the Division I level. The 59-point margin was the most in a loss for Towson since losing by 63 to William & Mary in 1948. In 2004 VCU thumped the Tigers 101-76. The Rams welcomed Towson into the CAA on Dec. 5, 2001 by handing the Tigers a 91-68 loss in their league debut. VCU rattled off 10 straight wins before the Tigers slapped the Rams with their only loss in the first 13 meetings, winning 59-57 in the Towson Center five years ago. VCU then started another streak against the Tigers and has won the last six in a row.
UPDATING TOWSON: The Tigers dropped their 7th straight game when UNC Wilmington outlasted them 66-60 two nights ago in Trask Coliseum. Towson played well enough to win but the Seahawks were more composed in the closing minutes when a crucial 8-1 run determined the outcome. The Tigers trailed most of the first half but never by more than six points. The Tigers didn't waste any shots, finishing the first half shooting an impressive 64 per cent (14-22) from the floor. The hot hand cooled in the second half (32%). The Tigers, ranked second in the league at the free throw line, shot 10 of 16 from the charity stripe. Towson took its initial lead of the contest with 1:27 left in the first session on Isaiah Philmore's three-pointer. Josh Brown gave the Tigers their biggest lead, 34-31, on a breakaway layup after he picked the Seahawks for a steal. The three-point bulge didn't last long. UNCW trimmed Towson's lead to one at the buzzer. UNCW opened the second half with a 9-3 run to reclaim a lead it would not relinquish again. Dupree and Brown shared scoring honors with 14 points each. Dre Conner added a dozen off the bench. RaShawn Polk chipped in 10. Philmore, Towson's leading scorer, was held to 7 points but collected a team high 17 boards.
UPDATING VCU: VCU won its sixth straight to remain tied with Hofstra for first place in the CAA with a 59-50 victory over Old Dominion this past Saturday night. ODU took a one-point lead with seven minutes to play but VCU scored the games final seven points to pull out the win, handing the Monarchs their 2nd loss at home in their last 32 in the Constant Center. Senior forward Jamie Skeen registered his 5th double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard Bradford Burgess led all scorers with 15 points while senior guard Ed Nixon added 13 points. The Rams lead the CAA in steals (9.6 per game) and 3-pointers made (8.6 per game). Skeen leads VCU in scoring (14.5) and rebounding (8.0). Bradford is close behind with a 14.0 clip. Senior guard Brandon Rozzell is a third Ram in double figures with a 13.3 average. Senior guard Joey Rodriguez, a pre-season first team All-CAA selection, directs VCU's attack. He leads the conference in assists with 4.9 per game. He also has a team high 33 steals.
